Hawkwind Town Overview
Here is a quick overview of the towns for those players who are new to Sulaar, and thus Hawkwind. This is a listing of the human towns, or those controlled (in one way or another) by the Wrone Barony in Hawkwind. If there are any questions, please feel free to ask. If you don't ask, then I will assume that you fully understand these locations.
Jhelom – Jhelom is the capital and largest town in the Barony. With a population of nearly 18,000 citizens, Jhelom enjoys a healthy mercantile district with furs and silver mining as the Barony's main exports, supplemented by the sale of dwarven crafts. Its natural harbor supplies a profitable and bustling shipping industry, where port and docking taxes further stuff the city's coffers. Ships can be seen constantly entering and leaving Minoc Bay even a few hours after sunset, where the large flaming torches of Uatu's Eye, a towering lighthouse at the tip of Mingrir Hill, light the entrance even when the sun has settled behind the horizon. The yearly Gladiatorial Games are held in Jhelom during the spring, and attract countless visitors while drawing in betting revenue.
Trinsic - The next largest city in the Barony, Trinsic contains a great castle with an impressive garrison; it is home of the Wrone Western Army. It was erected on the broad side of Mingrir Hill with a pristine spot overlooking the mouth of the Bay. There is a small dock in Trinsic, which usually houses a handful of Sheen-class cruisers (a combat ship built off of a design originally created by the famed craftsmen of the Sheen Isles). The city of Trinsic, at a population of fewer than 6,000 does not benefit from as much of an industry boom. It is by far a much quieter town.
Skarren Brath - This small community of about 700 citizens is centered in the Brillian Valley, surrounded by the Grimspee Mountains. Skarren Brath was discovered by the famed ranger of the same name. The town has always remained small and served as a haven for adventurers in the area. Brillian Valley contains many attractive lures for thrill-seekers such as Eckizar's Laboratory, Isepic Pass, Blackhall Dungeon, the famed elder volcano Ashdown, and countless other places. Skarren Brath has capitalized and profited quite well from the flow of adventurers passing through to these destinations and stopping to purchase equipment, repair weapons and armor, stay at inns, and use the town's many other services. Though everyone is very open-minded to each other's beliefs, the town itself has only erected three temples: One for Heironeous, another for Pelor, and a third for Olidammara. With its distance from Jhelom, using regular military to garrison Skarren Brath would be too expensive for the Barony. For this reason, the Barony has a contract with The Brotherhood of Steel, a large mercenary union stationed in Rinnland, to guard the small town. The cost of the contract, though significant on its own, is still less expensive than maintaining an organized military force in the valley.
Buccaneer's Den - This small harbor town is the epitome of evil and treachery. Though technically under the wing of the Barony, Buccaneer's Den is overseen by Rhuul Brikler, the town's self-proclaimed mayor/tyrant. The Den's population is approximately 300 citizens, but there are always at least three times that many visitors in town at any one time. Order in the Den is established and loosely regulated by Brikler's private police force, The Black Flag Bouncers. Nearly anything is commonly accepted (if not expected) in Buccaneer's Den. Flagrant murder, however, will not go so easily overlooked. The local merchant's theory is "The more people you kill, the less customers we have." With this mentality, unwarranted slaughter will quickly earn you not only the distrust of the citizens but the wrath of local business. Occupation and control of Buccaneer's Den would be too costly for the Barony to commit to with the hopes of any profits appearing to be few and far off. The Den is also rumored to be a haven for the many pirates that strike at the ships that frequent the bay. To its citizens, however, it's more fact than rumor.
Mondain - The third largest city, Mondain enjoys a fairly small population with only 1500 or so citizens. It does, however, contain the famed Academy of Kor, a renowned school of the Arcane Arts. It is also the location of The Organization of Mages for the Public Good. Though some say the name is misleading, The Organization (as they're commonly referred to) is a powerful collection of 10-12 mages who spend their time researching new spells, arcane history, and general discussion on all topics from the source of a God's power, to manipulating universal energies. The common goal of all this research and hard work is the simplification of common life, and the advancement of the Barony’s people. They own and operate the Hawkwind Bookhall, a great and palatial library accessible to all residents of Hawkwind and Rinnland (though of course, Rinnlandians have quite a distance to go). With Mondain's influence so great, it has been assigned the third largest garrison of Barony infantry behind Jhelom and Trinsic; the Eastern Army.
Mantra - This town is virtually a large monastery compound with churches for only two gods Obad-Hai and Pelor. There is no combat allowed within the borders of the town, and all weapons are to be turned in to the watcher's tower at the town's only entrance. As the population is very small (no more than 300 citizens), the Barony does not normally assign a garrison in Mantra though one is present infrequently. In the event that the garrison is in-house, they too must abide by the no-weapon rule, and thus are always camped along the outer wall. Whenever the garrison is not present, the monastery can still use its considerable religious influence to demand immediate protection and/or intervention by the Barony if they so decided it, but as of yet, they have never. The compound can muster its own small militia of nearly 50 men in the event that defense of the town is necessary and troops will take too long to arrive.
Provil - This tiny town can only claim 200 citizens to its name, however its duty is immeasurable. The soil around Provil is very fertile and always has been. The cause of this richness, be it from the influence of magic or otherwise, is not known. Most rumors point towards magic because it is near Provil that the great Dwarven hero Kesper fell in battle with the demon Sheno. This has not yet been proven but it is currently being investigated by The Organization. Provil, so near to the Barony, does not usually maintain a garrison of troops. They are only visited by the Barony with any frequency for tax collection purposes. Lately, much to the joy of their weak economy, the town has experienced a lot more traffic. It seems that a hobgoblin clan was warring with a kobold tribe and the spillover had rolled into Provil. A group of adventurers resolved the clan disputes and were proclaimed the town's mayor by its citizens though the Barony has not yet recognized this new authority... and likely won't.
Cutter's Cove - A small 400-person fishing town, Cutter's Cove maintains a nicely sized garrison of Barony troops, a reinforced palisade, and perimeter scouts on constant patrol. This eleveated security is due to the small harbor it maintains. The harbor is operated by the Wrone Navy to protect the Eastern Shore and watch out for pirate activity. Even so, there are rarely more than 2 Sheen-class cruisers docked there at any one time. The harbor is rocky, much more than Jhelom’s and far too shallow to accept larger merchant cargo ships. Cutter's cove also provides some fishing and farming surplus to the Barony.
Sandy Shores - Another small fishing town of just over 300 citizens, Sandy Shores is known for nothing special. Sandy Shores rarely has any outstanding events that attract the attention of well... anyone. Deep mystics, sages, and others looking for peace and quiet with which to study and think often visit quiet and relaxing, Sandy Shores. It's extremely close to the narrow channel between Cape Thantris and the forested Rune Island, known to provide fertile fishing grounds. The town's surrounding is a great motivator for those seeking their fortune in the fish markets. The collected fish are shipped over to Jhelom in the mid-morning to preserve freshness. A very small Wrone military unit guards the town, not so much for its value but for its proximity to Cutter's Cove.
