Howard P. Lovcraft (20/3/1890-15/3/1937 Providence) : narratore statunitense autore di numerosi racconti fantastici imperneati di volta in volta sul soprannaturale, il macabro, l'orrifico e il fantascientifico.
E` considerato da molti uno dei precursori della moderna science-fiction angloamericana. Riscoperto in Europa soltanto in epoca recente in America i suoi racconti, che mentre era in vita erano stati quasi tutti pubblicati sulle allore appena nate riviste di SF, vennero raccolti in volumi da editori specializzati dopo la sue morte. I suio romenzi e racconti comprendono storie con tematiche come la sostituzione di persona, la creazione tramite procedimenti pseudoscientifici di esseri mostruosi e l'invasione aliena che poi saranno le fondamenta della fantascienza degli anni 30-40-50.
Numerose le citazioni che questo autore o le sue creature hanno avuto in film (La Casa e l`Armata delle Tenebre di Raini, quasi tutti i film di Carpenter solo per citarne alcuni), fumetti (qui in Italia sia Zagor che Martin Mistere si sono trovati di fronte ai Grandi Antichi o ai loro adoratori e Dylan Dog ha incontrato Lovcraft in persona) o libri. Del resto molti grandi autori contemporanei come Stephen King o il compianto Fritz Leiber si sono piu`o meno dichiaratamente ispirati a Lovecraft o al mondo da lui creato per i loro libri.
In Italia i racconti e i romanzi di H.P.L. sono stati publicati ultimamente negli Oscar Mondadori (4 volumi + 1 di lettere curati da G. Lippi) e dalla Newton come cofanetto (5 volumi curati da G. Pilo e S. Fusco). Esistono altre edizioni ( Fanucci, SugarCo, ecc.. ) ma tra le raccolte recenti ritengo che siano se non le piu` complete sicuramente quelle con il miglior rapporto prezzo/qualita`. I racconti degli altri autori che hanno trattato i Miti si possono trovare quasi tutti in edizioni Fanucci, Newton e negli Urania .

* I racconti che preferisco
P.S. Ho decisodi includere nell`elenco anche delle collaborazioni e revisioni di H.P.L. in quanto in alcuni di questi racconti era fortemente presente l`infliuenza dello scrittore (opinione personale). Peraltro nelle edizioni in commercio viene quasi sempre indicato quando si tratta di collaborazioni anche se spesso vengono passati come tali anche racconti in cui Lovcraft non ho scritto praticamente nulla.
Altri scrittori dei Miti
Moltissimi scrittori hanno usufruito dellle idee e del background creato da
H.P.L. alcuni producendo dei buoni racconti, altri dei prodotti decisamente
scadenti (opinione personale) per questo motivo riporto solo i racconti che
considero dalla sufficienza in su, naturalmente tra quelli che ho letto.
