Spawn is actually short for Hellspawn or Hell's Pawn whichever fits the situation. Spawn started out as a CIA sponsored assassin named Al Simmons, until he asked too many questions about his boss Jason Wynn. Wynn had him murdered by another assassin named Jessica Priest. Al (being an atheist and murderer) went straight to the 8th level of Hell where he met the devil Malebolgia.
Malebolgia then uses Al's love for his wife Wanda Blake to trick him into becoming Hellspawn, a ranking General in Hell's army. Al agrees to be a Spawn on the simple term that he can return to Earth and see his wife again. Malebolgia sends him back all right, but not the way Al wanted.
Al awakens in an alley in New York referred to as Rat City. He is now bonded with a living costume born in Hell, and looks like he's been deep fried. He finally remembers why he is back and what happened and discovers 5 years have passed since his death. Wanda is remarried to Al's best friend Terry Fitzgerald and has a child, Cyan, by him.
And so Al's torture and training begin.
