Dan played football in high school. Younger brother,
Frank, said Dan was twice named all state in Galax,
VA, and in Whiteville, NC. After marrying Mae in
Whiteville, NC. Dan moved to Dillon, SC, and opened
a grocery store. During the depression Dan
discovered that he was making more money from the
little table where he put items traded for food than
from the sale of groceries. He then became a pawnbroker.
Dan also kept bees most of his life. His hobbies
included building model airplanes and repairing and
collecting watches. His brother Frank said that Dan
was a great football player during his high school
years. Dan entertained nephews and nieces
with his stories of life with granddaddy Eli in
New Mexico and Oregon. Dan and Mae were very
gracious and they always welcomed visits by relatives
passing through. Dan and Mae's love for one another
was very evident.
Mae was a school teacher before marrying Dan. Mae
collected dolls. Most were kept in a spare bedroom.
Young children were often afraid to sleep in
the room because the doll eyes bothered them.
Dan and Mae's children are:
1. Dan Jr. (23-Nov-1928
to 4-Mar-1992),
2. Leroy Mike (24-Jan-1931),
3. Carolyn (1-Mar-1933 to 22-Apr-1933) that died of
whooping cough and is buried in Whiteville Memorial, and
3. Frank (27-Oct-1942).
Mike and Carolyn were born in Whiteville, NC, and
Frank in Dillon, SC.
