Johnson was the grandson, nephew and cousin of other Johnson
Winesett's living at the same time. He was born in Carroll
County, VA, and was a farmer.
The 1860 Federal Census finds Johnson, age 20, in the Cranberry Plain
District working as a copper miner. He was accompanied by his
wife, Phebe E. and daughters Mary J., age 4, and Hannah C., age 1.
Johnson and his family were in Sulphur Springs for the 1870 Carroll
County, Federal Census. Mary J. was not present.
Johnson and his family were in Grayson County, VA, for the 1880 and 1900
censuses. Johnson's mother, age 76, was living with him at the
time of the 1880 census.
Johnson died in Galax, VA, and his son, Jefferson Davis Winesett, handled
the sale of his estate. Currently little is known about Johnson, any
help would be appreciated.
Johnson and his brother Garrett served in Company C, 29th Regiment, CSA.
He enlisted 25-Jul-1861, re-enlisted 4/62 and was present to 4/64.
Little is known about Phebe other than she was born in Carroll County, VA.,
and is the sister of Ailcey the wife of Johnson's brother, Garrett. Phebe
and Ailsey's father, Howell, is the brother of Charles and Richard Farmer
who married Margaret and Martha Winesett, the aunts of Johnson and Garrett.
The death record for Phebe records her middle name as Elizabeth. Her will,
Will Book 5, page 131, left land to sons John Walter and Lawrence with
instructions to take case of her husband so long as he remained a widower.
Witnesses were A.W. Farmer of Tipton and S.W. Winesett of Eona and was signed 25-Aug-1900 with her mark
"X". I have been unable to identify S. W. Winesett. Any help would be
appreciated.
Johnson and Phebe's children are:
Did Mary J. marry or die? Hannah married Henry "Bud" Harmon
22-Oct-1874 and they lived nearby; What happened to Sarah? I need
confirmations and corrections regarding Johnson and his family. When he
bothered to record births, he often used initials rather than
the full name. I did not find birth records for those who
do not have a full birth date. I guessed based on the age given at the
time of the various censuses.
1. Mary J. (8-Aug-1856 and either died before 1870 census
or she was already married and had left home),
2. Hannah Catherine or Coltraine (25-Sep-1858 to 30-Dec-1928);
3. Jefferson Davis (15-Jun-1861 to 13-Feb-1916);
4. Sarah "Sallie" Lucinda (about 1864
to before 1910) who married 3-Jan-1882 Martin A. Lineberry;
5. Amelia "Millie" Evelyn (3-Oct-1868 to 7-Nov-1887) who married, 21-Jan-1886, Andrew David Robinson in Carroll County, VA, and died of childbed fever, Her middle name is also listed as "Eveline";
6. Letha L. (9-Apr-1871 to 1950's);
7. Cordelia E. (about 1873 to ?) who married
Booker Richardson;
8. Twin#1: Clark (5-Apr-1875 to ?);
9. Twin#2: John Walter (5-Apr-1875 to 8-Aug-1965);
10. Laura G. (1-Jun-1877 to 15-Apr [death record] Aug-1895 [gravestone]) of diptheria, and
11. Lawrence (Jan-1880 to 8-Aug-1965).
