Military Winesetts

The individuals named below are members of the Winesett/Winesette family who have served our nation in peace and in war. If any information is incorrect, I would appreciate a copy of the named individuals service record, discharge, DD Form 214, or other evidence.

The Webmaster has found no record of any Winesett before the 1820 Surry County North Carolina Federal Census. Accordingly no Winesett served in the Revolutionary Wary nor in the War of 1812, however, Several Winsetts served in the Revolutionary War and in the War of 1812.

Civil War

Johnson Winesett (3rd): Private, Company C, 29th Virginia Infantry (25-Jul-1861 to Apr-1864). Records are inadequate. Gooch Harman who collects Civil War artifacts states that Johnson continued to serve until deserting with Garrett.

Garrett Winesett: Sergeant, Company C, 29th Virginia Infantry (5-Mar-1862 to 13-Feb-1865). Garrett is listed as a deserter at Bermuda Hundred. However, the war was long lost, his men were starving, and they had no supplies. He took a group with him which supposedly included his brother, Johnson. The men took an oath of alegence and were released.
