One says, "Keep on traveling this highway,
Straight into Denver it goes.
I can't wait to reach my hotel room,
So I can get out of these clothes."
Drivin' all night going to Starfest
Drivin' straight through all night
We're all in the mood for convention
And that's got us drivin' all night.
Oh, la de da de de da (etc.)
Now John has the same booth there every year.
He gets me rare stuff for cheap
And he's quick with a joke, or a fig of Chakote
And there's no place that he'd rather be.
He says, "Jill this is really a thrillin' me,"
As a smile appeared on his face.
"Well I'm sure that I could be a millionare,
If Paramount would licence my place."
Now Dave is a convention newbie,
Who came here this time with his wife,
And they're talking with Jani, who comes here like crazy,
And probably will do for life.
And the emcee is announcing more guests
As the audience lets out a groan.
And they're sharing this thing they call Starfest,
But it's better than Creations' cons.
Drivin' all night going to Starfest
Drivin' straight through all night
We're all in the mood for convention
And that's got us drivin' all night.
It's a pretty good crowd for a Saturday,
And the guest star gives us a smile;
'Cause he knows that it's he, we've come here to see
To remember Trek for a while.
And the autograph line's a carnaval
Everybody crowing so near.
And we give to each star a glossy picture,
And say "Man, please sign your name here."
Drivin' all night going to Starfest
Drivin' straight through all night
We're all in the mood for convention
And that's got us drivin' all night
Due to some of the original lyrics, etc, I wrote this from my wife, Jill's perspective.
As you might guess, I got the inspiration for this song at 5 AM travelling on Interstate 70 from Salt Lake City to Denver (for the annual Star Fest Convention). I had been up all night at that point so that accounts for the necessary weirdness to do this song (of course I was listening to the original during the trip).

I've always liked Billy Joel. I grew up listening to many of his songs. A very powerful moment for me was a Billy Joel concert in Salt Lake City (on a Staurday) . Billy had ended his concert and come back out for an encore, which was "Piano Man". At one point he quit singing and playing and holds his microphone out to the crowd. Several thousand people then start singing the words. WOW!
