Everything Nice
SeaQuest -- season 2

Scene 1

Busy city scene, a loud speaker is blaring out "for everyone. Please keep our streets safe." The guys are crossing a street at the crosswalk, Tim and Tony in front, Dagwood and Miguel next with Lucas, drinking from a can, lagging behind.

Tony: Hey guys. This next place is gonna be great. (takes a bunch of tickets out of a pocket and gloats over them) And hear this, I got discount coupons.

Tim (leaning behind Tony toward Miguel): They must have come in his box of Solar Smacks. (to Tony) They come with a decoder ring, too?

Tony (glaring at him): Go ahead and joke. These ain't easy to come by.

Miguel: Hey, you gotta eat the whole box before you get those.

Tim (nodding and laughing): Yeah (Miguel moves ahead, even with Tim while Tony goes behind, tapping Tim's shoulder on the way. He and Miguel turn toward him)

Tony: You know, if you guys had gills, you'd be dangerous. This place is supposed to be a total blast. (moves ahead again between Tim and Miguel who begin making fishy faces at each other behind his back, their hands crossed at the wrists, fingers opening and shutting in a gill-type motion. Dagwood watches with bewilderment, tries to mimic the action, gets distracted and looks away.)

Lucas: Yeah, well that's what you said about the last 5 places where you got us thought out of .

Tony (turns and walks backwards, facing them, Tim and Miguel quickly drop their hands to their hips and look away from one another innocently. Miguel drops his arms, but Tim leaves them): Yeah, but when we get thrown out of this place, we'll have saved big bucks. (Turns around again)

Dagwood: Makes sense to me.

Lucas: Yeah, yeah. Well, I'm kinda beat. I say we just turn in.

Tony: Last night of R&R (walks backwards, looking them in the faces) and I'm out here w/ a bunch of nancies.

Dagwood (raising hand): I'm not a nancy.

Tony (runs through to the back and then front again, pleading with them and watching faces): Look, everyone I know who's been through this port says that this place is an absolute, first class must see (Tim wipes wearily at his face, Tony gestures with both hands, begging) and we get the must see for half the freight. (looks up) This is it. Last stop. I promise. Then we can go home for milk and cookies. Scout's honour.

They stop to open the door, the other four exchange glances and reluctantly agree. Tony goes in first, then Miguel, Tim, Lucas w/ Dagwood holding the door.

Dagwood: I didn't know Tony was a Boy Scout.

Entering the lobby, there is a counter there with a girl, Sandra Kirby, reading a book behind it, a turntable next to her. She is wearing a halter type, short dress, has long, curly dark hair, dark eyes, a heart-shaped face. She is wearing glasses. She is sitting on a stool, her right leg crossed over her left.

Tony (cocky and smug, he got his way): Hey doll, head's up. The boys from sQ are here.

Sandra (looking up reluctantly from her book, she's bored and unimpressed): And then my life's compleat. 40 each.

Tony: Uh, uh, uh, (holds the splayed out coupons between them like a cross in front of a vampire, snaps them shut) halfsies

Sandra (smiling sarcastically): Great, big night out? $100 for all 5.

Tim (digging into his pocket for his wallet): Tony, you said that we didn't have to pay. (Miguel is pulling out his cash, too. Dagwood is playing with the dangling tinsel at the door, draping it over his shoulder)

Tony: Hey, can it! Try to delay your whining until you try it. Hey, I'm telling you guys, (puts first two fingers of his right hand on his temple) they got these electrode things they stick on your noggin, you can pretty much dream up anything on your mind.

Miguel (pointing at him with his right forefinger, looking at girl): I'm not so sure you should let him in here. (grabs Tony's chin with his right hand and turns it to Sandra, who is definately not amused by the horseplay) This mind has been known to to great damage.

Tony: He's jealous. What about him? (turning suddenly and putting his right hand on Dagwood's left shoulder) Got any kid's discounts?

Sandra (craning her body around to see, almost interested, in a dubious tone of voice): Pretty big kid.

Tony: He eats well.

Sandra (tired of the lot of them): Look, it's the same for everyone. Even for high rollers with discounts. 20 each.

Tony (puts his money down and pulls out his wallet again): Ok, buddy. I'll spot you. (Miguel and Tim exchange glances.)

Dagwood (looking relieved and a little confused): Thank you.

Piccolo (exultingly): This is going to be great! (he goes through turn first, then Tim, Miguel, Dagwood. Lucas dawdles behind.)

Sandra: Instructions are on each consol. 30 min. Have a nice day dream.

Dagwood: But it's night.

Sandra: Exactly.

Lucas puts his money on counter, notices what she's reading, he still has his drink in his left hand.

Lucas: You, ah, understand Mannheim?

Sandra (picking up the cash): Why? Do I look like I don't?

Lucas: No. That's not what I meant. (leans forward on counter) I mean, that is, ah, umm, Mannheim has some fairly convoluted theories, not always easy to grasp.

Sandra: Really? I always found him to be sort of elementary. much more basic than Carsten.

Lucas( definately interested now, leans further forward, elbows on counter, crossing arms in front of him): You've read Carsten? That's amazing!

Sandra: Amazing that I got through it. Once you've hacked through his dense prose, the man's an empiracalist, easily proven wrong, don't you think?

Lucas: Yes. Absolutely. What's your name?

Sandra (picking up her book again, dismissing him): Look, you've go 30 minutes. You don't want to waste your money on me.

Lucas: Umm. It was nice meeting you.

Sandra (polite disbelief): Yeah, right.

Lucas: Ummm, thank you.

Sandra (sideways glance out of corner of her eye, strictly): Go

Lucas: Right, I'm going. Right. (Sandra looks up again once he's safely passed, watching his back disappear through the silver tinsel curtain a tender "he's cute" smile on her face.)

Scene 2

Piccolo's fantasy is of being a big rock singer w/ magic fingers who is loved everywhere he goes. Long tangled hair, bandanda on forehead, guitar, funky sunglasses, can't sing

Tony (singing)" 'Cause I go way, way, way down. Downtown!" Thank you. And they said I couldn't fill an area with women! "Scream if you love me, Scream if you care ..."

Women are screaming, crying, waving, yelling "To-ny, To-ny, To-ny". Dagwood as roadie holding up a sign that says "Gill Boy"

Scene 3

Miguel's fantasy - Sunset, animal noises, rooster crowing, horse whinnying), Focus is first on Miguel, then he comes forward and Lonnie Henderson appears wearing a southern belle dress, there is the streaked sky of sunset behind them.

Lonnie ; Well, Miguel, with tahk lahk that, you jes' about know how to turn a girls haid. (looks away)

Miguel (moving toward her, reaching for her hand): Turnin' your head is my intention, Ma'am, I just hope it's turning in my direction.

Lonnie: It's tahk lahk that, Gen'rul, that's bound to get one or both of us (looks up at him flirtatiously then away) regarded with some disfavour. (lowers voice, gazing at him earnestly, he gazes down into her eyes) You know how my daddy feels about my seeing you.

Scene 4

Tim's fantasy - bridge of the sQ under attack

Brody: Where's the Capt.

Miguel (leaning over Lonnie's shoulder at one of the two stations in front of command chair): On his wasy, sir. (sQ shakes, everyone braces self)

Brody: Evade Mr. Ortiz! Evade!

Miguel: We're doing the best we can!

Tim, dressed in the Captain's khaki uniform, peaked hat w/ a white silk scarf around his neck, 5 o'clock scruffy shadow, rushes in, followed by two women in the short, no sleeved wet suit. the one on his left is brunette, the other is blonde.

Tim: All right, all right. (pulls off his hat, hands it to the brunette on his left, sits down,) What have we got? (The brunette puts hat down behind command chair, both girls lean over Tim's shoulders, w/ hands on him.

Lonnie: Enemy ship 12 degrees off our port, Capt.

Tim: (clicking tongue:) All right. Full power. (blonde plays with his hair, looking admiringly at him.) Try to turn this ship around. Give'em a taste of what we've got. (brunette runs fingers through his hair)

Bridger: Aye, aye, sir. (he types) Coming around (pokes glasses up and squints at screen) Now, sir. (Looks toward Tim for approval.)

Scene 5

Dagwood's fatasy

Darwin (spinning): Darwin like Dagwood

Dagwood: Dagwood likes Darwin

Darwin (spins around): Dagwood nice.

Dagwood smiles sweetly and reaches out to touch at the screen, murmuring happily

Scene 6

Lucas' booth is empty, only static playing on the screen.

Tony (off screen): These chicks love me. Hey , Lucas! Whaddaya think? Lucas? How is this?

Scene 7

Sandra's apt. bldg. Lucas turns around with a sort of "pinch me, I'm dreaming" expression. He's nervous, unsure, prowling around looking at the stuff in her livingroom.

Sandra: I'm just going to change my clothes. Make yourself comfortable.

Lucas (picks up a picture frame): Ohh. This is a photograph of Alexander Kirby.

Sandra (enters wearing a white knit top almost falling off one shoulder, short skirt, no glasses): Sure is. (moves over to Lucas' left shoulder, puts her left hand on the frame, he is holding the other side)

Lucas (turning to look at her): Why is it in your living room?

Sandra (looking at him): Because he's my father.

Sandra is on one side of a kitchen bar pouring out coffee, Lucas sitting on a stool on the other side, mug in hand.

Lucas: So, Alexander Kirby is really your father?

Sandra: Why is that so hard to believe?

Lucas: He's one of the highest ranking science officers in the UEO. He's pretty much a legend.

Sandra (coming around from behind bar, moving toward couch: Tell me about it! Talk about trying to follow in your father's footprints.

Lucas: The man's a genius, Sandra. (chuckling nervously). He's brilliant. (Lucas follows her into the living room)

Sandra (sits, sprawling invitingly on the couch): I thought we came up here for coffee. Do we have to talk about him?

Lucas (moves behind couch, picks up a book from a table there): No, No. It's just that ... No.

Sandra: No extra charge for sitting down. (Lucas comes around and sits on the end, beside Sandra, looking at her warily) What?

Lucas: What do you mean?

Sandra: You're staring at me. (he looks away) No, it's ok, it's nice. I like it when you look at me.

Lucas (still not looking at her): I ... um, I don't meet that many girls who read Carrsten and understand Mannhein.

Sandra (archly): Do you meet that many girls?

Lucas: No. I, that's not what I meant.

Sandra: Do you think I meet a lot of guys who even know who Mannhein is? Do you think I invite a lot of guys up to my apartment? Well, I don't! The thing I hate most about being smart is that, most of the time, you have to hide it.

Lucas: I know. I spent a lot of time in school putting adventure book covers over whatever I was reading so no one would know.

Sandra (eagerly): You too? I remember once in my junior year, I was at a soccer game, I dropped my bag and Clayman's Universal Constants fell right out from behind Nancy Drew and the Mystery at Murder Point. Talk about busted! (she laughs)

Lucas (incredulous and growing excited): You read Clayman in high school?

Sandra: Yeah. I never heard the end of it.

Lucas (quietly and sincerely): You're very beautiful. (stops and looks away) You probably get guys saying that all the time.

Sandra (quietly, with a small head shake): Not guys who read Clayman.

Lucas (not looking at her): I just don't want you to think that I'm hitting on you.

Sandra: You mean, you're not? (he looks at her while she mock pout) I think I'm disappointed. (smiles to show it was a joke)

Lucas (nervous, doesn't want to blow this): No. I mean, No. I just didn't want you to think that I didn't mean it, (Sandra looks up at him through her eyelashes) that it was all an act.

Sandra: Lucas, if familiarity with Carsten's theory of binary constant is just an act, I can't wait for your next performance. (she leans forward and kisses him)

Scene 8

SeaQuest is docked above the water. Captain Bridger and Tim O'Neill are pacing down the dock, Tony is visible at a vidphone booth, making a call. Tim is in his blue uniform with a darker sQ vest on top, Captain is in the khaki uniform. Both are bare-headed and wearing sunglasses.

Tim: That was the last time we saw Lucas, Capt. We spent a couple of hours checking every bar we got thrown out of.

Captain: It's not like him. (Tony hangs up and runs to catch up, rounding in front of them) He knows there's a curfew at 0200 hours.

Tony: Cops don't have anything. Good news is no bodies matching Lucas' description showed up overnight.

Captain: That's a pleasant thought.

Tony: I don't know what to tell you Captain. I kinda feel responsible.

Captain (looking up): Ahh, look at this. (an ebullient Lucas exits a Taxi and leans forward, he looks at the three of them a wide smile on his face)

Lucas (joking laugh): Oh, don't tell me you've been waiting up for me?

Captain (sternly): Do you realize that you're 6 and 1/2 hours AWOL?

Lucas (nothing touches him): Ahhh, that long?

Captain: you think this is funny. I could throw you in the brig.

Lucas (putting on his leather jacket): I don't think that's going to be a problem.

Captain: Oh no?

Lucas: No. I'm a civilian, Captain. Technically, I don't think civilians can be AWOL.

Captain: You're still a member of this crew.

Lucas (grows serious, looking down): That's what I want to talk to you about. (Tim and Tony exchange glances)

Captain: I'm all ears.

Lucas: I'm requesting relief of my duties as chief computer analyst on the seaQuest.

Captain: Effective as of when?

Lucas: Immediately.

Station Break I.D.

Scene 9

Tony: You sure you don't want to give this a little more thought, champ?

Lucas: I have given it thought.

Tony: Which part of you were you thinking with?

Lucas: What's that supposed to mean?

Tony: I gotta draw you a picture? Listen to your buddy here, the voice of experience. She aint worth it. Aint none of them are worth it. (uses both hands slashing down uncrossing in front to make a negating gesture)

Lucas: What do you know about it? (moves to the far side of the steps to get some books off a case there)

Tony: Think you're the first guy ever to fall in the pit. Get in line.

Lucas: It's not like that.

Tony: Of course it's not. She's different, she's not like the others.

Lucas: There aren't any others.

Tony: (splutters, throwing his hands up in the air, standing up off the steps and following Lucas to the bunk) That's even crazier. Look Lucas, you're a good kid. There's a lot more to you than I thought when I first came on board this tug, but you're still a pup. You ain't even got your fangs yet.

Lucas: Then I guess I'm going to have to grow them quickly. Excuse me.

Tony: Only problem is that they're probably going to end up sticking in your own neck. Don't do this, Lucas. Not for a girl you've only known 10 minutes.

Lucas: six hours.

Tony: Oh, excuse me. I didn't know we were talking deep, meaningful committment.

Lucas: You don't understand.

Tony (moving to Lucas' left shoulder): Why? Because I'm an ex-con and you're a genius? We're guys, that means there's a lot more of the same stuff running through our blood than different.

Lucas: I don't think so.

Tony: Oh, no? Then how does this fit? (he moves away, closer to the bed and starts a monologue) It's hard to describe her, she's, I don't know, she's different. (Lucas stops packing to listen, but doesn't look at Tony) She seems to know what I'm thinking. All right, she's beautiful, but it's more than that. Sometimes, she even knows what I'm going to say before I say it. Like there's this magical connection. (Tony moves closer, back to Lucas' shoulder as he goes in for the kill) Like, maybe, we knew each other in some other time, some other place. LIke we're supposed to be together. (Lucas looks very thoughtful, still refuses to meet his eyes) Hey! What can I tell you? Put a pillow over your lap, you'll muffle the voices. (There's a silence)

Lucas (looking up at him levelly): I'm going to see the Captain.

Tony: Kids! wheew!

Scene 10

Captain's quarters, Lucas, Wendy Smith and Captain Bridger

Lucas: Ah, what are you? My parents? And what's she doing here?

Wendy (archly): She? Thank you very much!

Lucas (presses his eye sockets with the heels of his hands, drops them and gestures toward the captain): I didn't mean it like that. This is between me and the Captain.

Wendy (moving toward him with a shrug): Actually, this is between you and you. I'm not sure you've had that converstation, yet.

Lucas (left hand up at back of neck, drops it and moves around, countering her movement): Well, you ought to know.

Captain (sharply): Lucas! I think you can show a little more respect than that!

Lucas: I'm sorry, Captain. (turns to Wendy) I'm sorry. (snaps an envelope at the Captain) I just want to make it official.

Captain (looking at it, refusing to move toward it): Technically, I don't have to accept that. I could make you go through channels. It could take months.

Lucas: It's just a formality. (waves it around for emphasis) The only thing that would change is that I would leave a few months later and I'd like you a whole lot less than I do right now. (a mild threat? he moves away, still holding the resignation)

Captain (trying to be a voice of reason and stepping toward Lucas, appealing): I'm asking you to reconsider. If this girl is all you say she is, she'll be waiting for you at the end of the tour.

Lucas: I can't take that chance. What if she's not? (throwing arms out and moving up to challenge the Captain) What if she meets someone else?

Wendy (shrugging. She is leaning on the counter under the tube window, one hand on the back of a nearby chair): That's the point. If she can't wait, if she does meet someone else, then she's not worth giving everything up for.

Lucas (he is bracketed by the two of them, attacked on both sides): Ohh, that sounds good when you people say it. But that's not the way people are. Now, are you going to accept this?

Captain: Conditionally.

Lucas (warily): What conditions?

Captain: On the condition that we have 24 hours before we sail out of here. I want you to go and have a conversation with her.

Lucas (turns and walks away rapidly, gesturing wildly): This is ridiculous. No! NO!

Captain (snaps order): Sit down, Lucas! (Lucas sits) Listen to me. I know it isn't easy being reasonable. But I'm not asking anything more of you than your father would. But he's not here. I'm here. I want you to go talk to this girl, tell her your expectations, talk to her about marriage, talk to her about children, living together, anything. You need time to think yourself. And if her expectations are the same as yours, fine. If you want me to accept it, I'll accept it.

Lucas (looking disgusted, stands up, facing the Captain, chin up): Nothing's going to change.

Captain: All right. Then you have nothing to lose, right? (Lucas would like to argue this, but he can't. He turns and leaves)

Scene 11

Back at the apt. bldg. Lucas is in a glass elevator going up, sees Sandra in the other elev. down with two men, one of them is holding a gun on her

Lucas: Sandra? Oh, No! (turns and starts frantically pushing buttons) come on, come on come on. (turns, sees them leave the elevator, pushes more buttons, door opens he runs after them. Lucas sees the guys push Sandra into a car as he runs out of the bldg doors) Somebody call the police! (he runs up to a Taxi - there is no driver in it, and starts to get in, sees one of the guys aiming a gun at him, he runs away and the Taxi blown up. Goes over to the burning vehicle and looks at it, stunned by his narrow escape. Looks up and watches Sandra watching him worriedly from the back window of the escaping car)

Station Break

Scene 12

Sandra's Apt bldg., Sandra's apartment is being gone over with a variety of police scanning devices, looking for any fingerprints, clues, etc. Inspector Donnegan and Lucas walk into the living room, the inspector has a pad in his left hand while examining a black and white pen-sized wand in his right. Lucas is standing at Donnegan's right shoulder, he has his left hand up on the back of his head.

Donnegan (holding up the wand): Do you know what this is?

Lucas: No, what is it?

Donnegan (holding it out): If I knew I wouldn't have to ask.

Lucas (takes it in his right hand and examines it curiously): Ah, I've never seen it before in my life.

Donnegan: Let's go over a couple of things. How long have you known Miss Kirby? (pacing away and turning to face Lucas)

Lucas (leans over the back of the chair): I've already told you.

Donnegan: I'm a cop, I don't catch on fast. Amuse me.

Lucas: I just met her.

Donnegan: Right. And you said there was something special. Care to elaborate?

Lucas: Not particularly.

Donnegan: All right. What do you know about her father?

Lucas: Her father?

Donnegan: The man who married her mother...

Lucas (stands and circles around to front of chair): I know who he is. But ...

Donnegan: But you don't know him? Yes or no will do fine.

Lucas: Well, ah, ... She did say that she worked with him.

Donnegan: Anything else slip your mind?

Lucas: Am I a suspect here or are you naturally unpleasant? (holds out the wand, Donnegan ignores it)

Donnegan: I like that. "Naturally unpleasant". (sits down) I'll have to run that one by my wife. She likes to use stuff like that against me. Look, Mr. Wolenczak, everybody's a suspect until they're not.

Detective: Inspector?

Donnegan: Yeah?

Detective. Nothing too much out of the ordinary. Found some traces of concrete mixture.

Donnegan: Which means?

Detective: Not sure.

Donnegan: Mr. Wolenczak, I'm going to have to ask you to stay around. I'll need to ask you some more questions. Go back to the ship, and stay put. And if I need you, I won't have to look for two people.

Lucas: If you hear anything ...

Donnegan: You're on my mailing list. You forgetting something? Thanks.

Detective: What's your take?

Donnegan: He's telling the truth. Look, nice and steady with no bleeps. Actually, he seems rather disturbed by the whole thing.

Detective: You know that one of these days, you're going to get busted with this thing?

Donnegan: But until then ... (laughs)

Lucas comes out of elevator, adjusts his shirt, checks his watch, Desk clerk sees him.

Desk Clerk: Oh, Hey! Are you Lucas Wolenchezak?

Lucas: Yeah, Wolenczak.

Desk Clerk: Someone dropped this off for you. (hands him a large manila envelope)

Lucas: Who was it?

Desk Clerk: Never saw him before. Just said you'd be coming out of 1018, Miss Kirby's place.

Lucas opens envelope, takes out note 'Please come. I can explain everything. Sandra' and a locator. He turns it on, looks around and takes off.

Scene 13

Outside view, seaQuest at dock. Wendy walks in on the Captain who is pruning a series of bonsai trees (4 or 5)

Wendy: I thought I might find you here

Captain: Lucas not back, yet?

Wendy: Not yet. He'll be ok, you know.

Captain: I know. Pretty rusty in my fathering, wouldn't you say?

Wendy: I don't know. Maybe he found the right girl

Captain: The right girl? After one night? Well, I'll take that back. I was 17 myself, once.

Wendy: And you survived.

Captain: Amazing.

Wendy: You did. We all do.

Captain: No word?

Wendy: Uh-uh. (sits and really looks at the plants) These are very beautiful. What do you do to make them grow like that?

Captain (rearranging, pushing the one he was working on away, pulling another closer): Patience and a lot of attention.

Wendy (stroking leaves): Do you design them so they come out that way?

Captain: No, Nature does it, (Wendy stands again) I just help. A little judicious pruning here and there. I work on them all the same way, but they all grow up a little different. Surprising; and beautiful.

Wendy: Like children. (taps his shoulder and heads out) See you later. (Captain looks very thoughtful indeed)

Scene 14

A dump for wooden loading pallets, narrow corridors, Lucas checks finder. Looks around, comes into an open space, around a corner, following the device

Lucas: Sandra?

Robert (scruffy beard, hair pulled back, wearing a plaid shirt and hard hat): You lose something?

Lucas: Actually, I was looking for someone.

Robert: Don't tell me. A girl?

Lucas: Yeah.

Robert: Well cheer up, you came to the right place. (Shoots him with two trank darts. Lucas falls to the ground.)

Fuzzy, Sandra's concerned face coming into focus, she has a scraped bruise on the right side of her face, near her eye.

Sandra: Lucas. Lucas. Lucas, are you all right?

Lucas: Sandra. ( he starts to sit up, groans and touches his chest, lies back down) Oh, bad idea.

Sandra (touches his cheek softly): I'm so sorry. This is all my fault.

Lucas: You're hurt. (reaches up toward the scrape, strokes her hair instead)

Sandra: I'm all right.

Lucas: No.

Sandra (insisting bravely): I'm ok.

Lucas (sits up on one elbow, looking at bruise closely, his hand on side of her face): No you're not. They did this to you and they can't get away with it.

Sandra: I'm ok. I'm not hurt.

Lucas: Sandra, what's going on? Who were those guys?

Sandra: I don't know. They call themselves the Freedom Fighters LIberation Army, or something like that.

Lucas (sits up and turns, touches back of head as if it hurts): Headcases. What do they want with you?

Sandra: You!

Lucas: I don't understand.

Sandra: They must have followed you last night. They saw us together. I guess they figured they'd use me to get you.

Lucas: For what? Why?

Sandra: I don't know.

Lucas (pulling note from inner pocket, unfolds it and hands it to her): Well, I guess you didn't write this then.

Sandra (looks at it, shakes head): No. Lucas, I never meant any of this to happen.

Lucas (stands up, looking around for a way out): It's not your fault.

Sandra (sounds like she's about to cry): You probably hate me for this.

Lucas (quickly moves in front of her, with a tender, concerned expression): Naw. Naw, I don't hate you. I could never hate you. (he kisses her)

Sandra: Do you think it's possible to know someone for only a few hours and know that you could look a life time and never find anyone you could feel the same way about?

Lucas: I know it's possible. (the door slams open, David, a dark, twitchy, long haired, wild eyed revolutionary; Robert, and a woman enter. Lucas and Sandra turn, startled to face them)

David: Aren't you glad that we arranged this little reunion?

Lucas: What do you wnat?

David: Not much. (shrugs, almost a shiver over his whole body) Just the seaQuest.

Lucas (incredulous smile on face): SeaQuest! (expression fades) You're out of your minds.

David: mmmm. Maybe so ( his fingers touch tips, then lace together in front of his buckle), but it doesn't change anything.

Lucas: Just how do you plan on getting the seaQuest?

David: Well, now that we've got you here, you're going to get it for us.

Lucas (flat tone): You're dreaming.

David: And you're alive, count yourself lucky. And I'm not so sure your girlfriend is quite so lucky. (he pulls out a gun, shoots her. Sandra falls. The other two terrorists rush forward, grab Lucas' arms and prevent him from doing anything. He struggles against them. David looks amused. Looking down at Sandra) She's ok. I just gave her a little love tap. It wouldn't do to kill her yet, it might make you feel, ummm... (he sniffs, shivers all over) less cooperative. (to others) Get him out of here. They pull Lucas out of room, David looks down at Sandra and then follows

Station Break

Scene 15

In an instrument filled room watching vid

Announcer: ... was sworn in today as the third chancellor of United Earth Oceans. Seen here with his wife, Marika, Kamenko's pledge to solidify and strengthen the UEO policy won him a handy victory over his opponent Myah Singh, the independant candidate.

David (watching, sniffs and turns to Lucas, being held by Robert): That's the kind of thing we're trying to stop.

Lucas: The UEO?

David: No. Fascism, bureacracy, government domination...

Lucas: Mental health care (David slaps him)

David: You think this is funny?

Lucas: No, I think it's crazy.

David: I want the Dead Man's Codes.

Lucas (looking startled): I don't know what you're talking about.

David (jerking head at the woman sitting on a stool in front of the vid): I thought you'd say that. (Moves toward the screen where schematics of the seaQuest are coming up, Lucas is appalled at what he sees) When the UEO built and designed seaQuest, they weren't going to leave their most expensive project to chance. Knowing full well that part of the seaQuest mission profile was potential combat, they were willing to risk the lives of the crew without risking the boat itself.

Lucas (looking at the screen, not really taking in what he was saying): Where did you get these?

David: In the event that the crew is killed or (shudders with delight at the thought) incapacitated to the point where they were in no condition to commandeer the boat, they designed the Dead Man's feature. With the proper code sequence, the entire boat can be brought to any location by remote control. How am I doing?

Lucas: I wouldn't know.

David: The codes are changed and scrambled on an intermittent basis, one set is kept by Secretary General McGath, the other flashed into the read-only memory on the seaQuest main computer. Whoever has the codes, can control the boat.

Lucas: That's incorrect.

David: I thought you didn't know anything about it. (fingers laced in front of him, moves toward Lucas)

Lucas: You've only got half the information. See, helm control always has priority.

David: Ahh, but that's only if someone is at the helm. (both thumbs raised in "goal") We happen to know that seaQuest is about to embark on a 3 month tour of WestPac. We also happen to know that the UEO always likes to throw a big bash the morning before departure. With the exception of a small skeleton crew tomorrow morning, no one will be minding the store.

Lucas: Like I said, you're out of your minds.

David (looking down) : Well maybe after we have the seaQuest, people will feel different.

Lucas: Dream on. (David loses it. Grabs Lucas' shirt and pushes him ups against the wall, has his face inches from the others and speaking intensely)

David: Listen up, boy wonder. I'm not playing games here. There's no way my people can get on that boat, but you have free access to the boat and the main computers. I want that coded chip. Roberts can be right by your side. This camera makes sure that when he can't be with you, he'll be watching. Don't remove it. You take one wrong step or even nod at someone the wrong way and I'm back here watching and I begin to take your girlfriend apart, piece by piece. You'd be surprised at how much pain a human being can endure before they die. You try and away, which you won't, I'll find you and, I promise, you'll beg me to kill you. (he releases his hold on Lucas' shirt and backs away. Lucas is breathing heavily, terror on his face)

Scene 16

SQ outside view at dock

Wendy is curled up on a wicker work chair, shoes at the side, she fell asleep while reading, hears an echo of Lucas' words in her head "You won't get away with this"

Wendy: Lucas? (she jumps up and leaves room)

Scene 17

Robert and Lucas drive up to the dock

Robert: I'll be here. 10 min. (Lucas gets out of car, adjusts his shirt) and goes in. Rob watches him.)

Scene 18

Lonnie is alone on bridge checking things over and making entries into a yellow electronic looking thing, she is wearing a white tank style top, blue hip-hugging bell-bottoms a heavy tool belt that has a flash light depending on the back right hip among other things.

Lonnie (surprised): Hey! Lucas, what are you doing here?

Lucas: Hey. Ahhh, I just have to take care of a few things.

Lonnie: Well? How's the romance?

Lucas: Great, are you the only one working here?

Lonnie: Yeah, for the moment. Sooo..., Tell me about her? What's she like? (Lucas heads up toward the WSKRS station, flips a few things)

Lucas (absently): She's just great.

Lonnie: Yeah and .... ? (steps up under him, hoping for some good gossip)

Lucas (stops and leans forward over the console): Look, can you do me a favour, please.

Lonnie: You need a little female advice. Ok. (She puts the board down on her right side) Listen, it's very very simple. (hands up on the edge, she's looking up at Lucas, close to the bank of equipment) Tell her you love her at least once a day and always listen, whatever she's talking about, always listen.

Lucas (amused in spite of the situation): Well, ah, thank you very much, but that wasn't the favour. I've got to close out some open logs here and I'm really in a hurry ...

Lonnie: Can't stand to be away from each other. (shakes head with admiration) I think it's great.

Lucas: Yeah, something like that. (Robert is watching on the monitor) Look, there's a book in my quarters, Menker's Physics. I'd get it myself but ...

Lonnie: Hey, no problem. Menker's Physics. Anything else?

Lucas: No, I, ah, just need that book.

Lonnie: back in a flash (Lonnie goes off bridge, Lucas hurries from the WSKRS station to the forward station opens a panel in front of comm and removes a chip from there while Robert watches on the monitor.)

Scene 19

Lonnie in Lucas & Piccolo's room looking around, opens lockers pulls out a magazine, opens and looks at it dubiously. "Uhhh. Must be Piccolo's. Right." (Looks at mirror on Lucas' open locker door, strikes a pose. Shakes head with dismissal.) "You got me..." (heads back to bridge)

Scene 20

On Bridge

Lonnie: Lucas, I don't know where you ... hid that .... book but ... Lucas?

Scene 21

Back at terrorist hq

David (to the woman): Make sure you check the amperages on that transmitter, we only get to do this once.

Robert (entering behind Lucas): We got it.

Lucas: I've got what you want, (shaking the chip at David) now where's Sandra?

David (moves toward Lucas, making 'gimme' gesture with fingers of right hand): Give it to me!

Lucas: No! Not before you bring Sandra here. (David pulls out a gun and cocks it, sniffing and shrugging shoulders involuntarily)

Kirby: I assure you, Mr. Wolenczak, that my daughter has not been harmed. (Alexander Kirby comes into view from behind David's right shoulder)

Lucas: Dr. Kirby!

Kirby: I suggest you do what he says. (David twitches nervously) David's a good soldier, but he tends to have a hair trigger. You never know what will set him off.

Lucas: I don't understand. Where's Sandra?

Sandra (coming in from around David's left): Right here, Lucas. Now give me the chip (she aims a trank gun at him) I don't want to have to hurt you. (snatches chip from him)

Lucas (lost and betrayed): Sandra?

Station Break

Scene 22

Back at Sandra's apt bldg. Inside her apartment, Donnegan is seated at a round table, looking at the lie detector pad, Captain Bridger is on his right holding the wand with Wendy seated closely next to him, her right hand at the nape of neck, elbow on table)

Detective: We've got a little more than we did 8 hours ago.

Donnegan: Thanks. (Detective moves away. Donnegan turns to the Captain and Wendy) Seems as though Sandra Kirby isn't all the sugar and spice that Mr. Wolenczak imagines her to be. What did he tell you about her?

Captain: He said that he was enamoured of her. That he thought she was very bright. Someone special.

Donnegan: Bright and special. She ought to be. (picks up a photo frame and passes it over to Captain Bridger) Her father's Alexander Kirby.

Wendy (putting her hand on the frame and examining it with the Captain, their heads close together): The Marcel Study Kirby?

Donnegan: That's the man. (drumming the fingers of his right hand, holding glasses up near his chin, gestures with the glasses from time to time) From what I hear, he was supposed to be the cream of the cream of UEO science and research division. (Wendy puts the picture down and gives Donnegan her attention during this)

Captain (giving Donnegan a hard stare): Supposed to be?

Donnegan: Seems the good doctor holds some unconventional political ideas. He was given an enforced leave of absence about 2 months ago. In the meantime, the UEO has been preparing a case to dismiss him from his post.

Captain: How can a man of Kirby's stature be dismissed for political reasons. It's gotta go beyond that?

Donnegan: What I've pieced together is that in the last few months some highly classified documents that were under the supervision of the Doctor have been tampered with. That started an internal investigation and the investigators have been waiting to gather more evidence.

Wendy (leaning forward): What does all this have to do with Lucas.

Donnegan: Well, he's young and impressionable and Sandra Kirby is very attractive and some of her ideas may be very appealing considering the packaging.

Captain (shifting impatiently at the idea): I don't believe that. I don't think Lucas would go for any cockamamie political ideologie. He's a scientist, not a polemicist. He's too smart for any of that.

Donnegan: Do you know a lot of men who are too smart when it comes to women?

Captain: So, where do we go from here?

Donnegan: You can go where ever you want, preferably back to the boat to see if Mr. Wolenczak shows up. I have a long night ahead of me. We're hoping to get on the track of the good doctor. If we come up with anything, we'll let you know.

Captain (starts to stand up): Thanks. (pauses and hands wand over) Oh, this is yours. (continues up and turns toward the door)

Donnegan (standing and moving away with them): Thanks, I almost forgot that.

Scene 23

terrorist HQ, David checking equip. Robert on roof watching dish move

Robert (in PAL): All right. 10 degrees south of southeast.

David (down in the control room) : Right.

Robert: Perfect. I'm coming down

David: We're set.

Kirby (admiring the chip): It's so simple, so perfect. (looks up at Sandra on his left, David approaches on his right. Kirby checks his watch) 3 hours. Time enough to recheck all systems. Now that we have the codes, when we transmit them; I want to make damn sure they're received.

David: We've already been through it 100 times.

Kirby: Good. Make it 102. (gets up and walks away, Sandra looks at David, then follows him. She stops, looks over at Lucas, who has his hands tied behind his back, sitting, guarded by yet another one of the revolutionists, a clean-shaven man with longish dark hair and glasses, holding a gun at rest on his lap. He is half sitting on some table. Sandra moves toward Lucas.)

Sandra: Are you all right? Look, if I thought you would understand ...

Lucas (not looking at her, feeling disgusted all around): I understand Sandra. You and your father want to make the world a better place.

Sandra: And you disapprove?

Lucas: Be careful what you wish for, a better world wouldn't have room in it for people like you. (He turns his eyes only toward her to see what she thinks of that. Sandra looks stunned for a moment.)

Sandra (checking the ropes on his wrists): Sure these the bindings aren't too tight? (to guard as she walks past him and out of room) If he needs something, see that he gets it.

Scene 24

UEO Party
Tony is wearing a white uniform with a mandarin type collar, talking with Donnegan, who is making notes in a small notebook pad, Captain Bridger is at Donnegan's right shoulder and Wendy is nearby, listening, wearing a black leather-like vest, her hair pulled back.

Tony: I'm tellin' you. We're just out on the town, just doin' the guy thing and we just sorta end up there.

Donnegan: Sorta? So your stopping at Virtual Dreams was pure coincidence?

Tony: Well, that and the fact that I had discount coupons.

Donnegan: Where'd you get these discount coupons?

Tony: A guy gave them to me.

Donnegan: what guy?

Tony: A guy. (Wendy smiles at the repetition) First day of leave a guy walks up to me, says 'here you go, Mac' shoves this envelope in my hand. What? I'm not supposed to use them?

Captain: I think that's enough. Thanks Tony. Thanks.

Tony (shrugging starts to move away, gives them his 'wide-eyed bewildered' expression, then mugs a frown at Donnegan): Sure.

Donnnegan puts the notepad away in an inside jacket pocket.

Captain: Any luck finding Dr. Kirby

Donnegan: Ah, seems as hard to find as his daughter.

Scene 25

terrorist HQ Alexander Kirby inserting chip into a device, flips switch

Kirby: We're ready.

David flips more switches, the satellite dish moves into position.

Scene 26

sQ bridge lights blink off then on, then starts emergency broadcast signal for Lucas, with a locating radar.

LUCAS WOLENCZAK
EMERGENCY BEACON
8A9-5

Scene 27

Back at the party, the signal flashes on several screens. Brody stops chatting up a pretty girl when he sees it and runs to the captain.

Brody: It's a Broadband E.S.

Captain: Yeah, with Lucas' ID on it.

Wendy: What is it?

Captain: It's an emergency seignal flashes on any available receiver. Let's go. (Brody and the Captain run out)

Scene 28

Terrorist HQ, the same signal is showing up on their screens, lights are flashing in an alarum sequence. Kirby and David are sitting in front of their panels, side by side, David is on Kirby's left. Kirby looks frazzled by the noise and confusion.

Kirby: What the hell's going on?

David (checking panels, trying switches): I don't know. We're transmitting some kind of distress call. (female terrorist comes between the two of them, kneels there trying to find the problem)

Kirby (starting to panic): Well, shut it down.

David: I can't. It's locked on. (he pauses, enlightenment hits) The chip!

Sandra looks at him, understanding dawns. She turns on Lucas viciously.

Sandra (right in his face): What the hell did you think you were doing?

Lucas (has hand on back of neck, puts it down and just as angrily answers): Trying to save your life.

Scene 29

police cars pull up in front of Virtual Dreams, Inspector Donnegan gets out, Captain Bridger on driver side of car. Terrorists come out of building, Robert, then Lucas, Sandra pushing him angrily with gun trained on his head, David and Kirby last.

Sandra (not so pretty now): Back off or I'll blow him away. (Brody in SWAT gear comes with a group of marines in gear) I mean it. Back off.

Brody(into PAL): My men can handle this.

Donnegan: No. I've got back up on the way.

Captain: Wait a minute. We've got a kid over there. What your back-up doesn't get here in time.

Sandra: I mean it.

(somebody - Donnegan?): No wait.

Donnegan (handing PAL to the Captain): All right.

Captain: Brody, go ahead. (The marines grab rope, grappling & climbing gear, guns, etc. Move out with out a lot of fuss, go to top of nearby buildings. Brody (only one without a helmet) stays on the ground moving from cover to cover closer to the front of Virtual Dreams)

Donnegan: You're surrounded. give yourselves up. Put your guns down before anyone gets hurt. Give it up. It's over. Where do you think you're going to go?

Sandra: If you don't want to see this guy splattered all over the pavement, then anywhere we want.

Kirby (appalled at what his little girl is doing, steps over to her and puts his arm around her shoulder, squeezing her): Sandra, Sandra, don't. (she gives him a "who are you?" scornful look)

Donnegan: Don't be a fool. Think it over. Hey. Come on. Listen to me.

Brody moves in closer. A marine comes down the side of a building, David sees him, fires and is shot himself, falls. There is a lot of shooting, one hits near Sandra and Lucas who flinch back, Lucas pushes Sandra into Kirby, grabs the gun away from her and runs away. Kirby places her backward "out of danger", she gets another weapon out and continues to fire. Rober, Kirby and Sandra are all close together in front of the building.

Brody: Over their heads, NOW! (The marines train their fire over the heads of the terrorists, aiming at the arcade which falls on top of them).

Scene 30

Lucas is sitting in the back of an ambulance, looking miserable, Wendy and the Captain come up to him, Wendy puts her hand on his shoulder. Donnegan comes up behind the Captain.

Donnegan: When you're up to it, I'm gonna need statement.

Captain: Donnegan, he needs a little more time. (Donnegan moves away. Captain looks sympathetically at Lucas) Hurts, huh?

Lucas: More than you can know.

Captain: Well, for what it's worth, I'm not going to accept your resignation.

Lucas (scoffing): Maybe you should.

Captain: Why? You were a valuable piece of manpower when you first came aboard. Why should I give you up now that you're older and more mature?

Lucas (looks from one to the other with eyes full of pain. Focuses beyond them): Excuse me. (he gets up out of the ambulance and walks over to one of the police cars. Sandra is handcuffed in the back seat, the window is rolled down. Lucas looks in, down at her.

Sandra: I suppose you expect me to say I'm sorry.

Lucas (he leans on the door, over the window): No, I don't expect anything from you.

Sandra: We're a lot alike, Lucas.

Lucas: You mean that 'I read Clayman in high school act'? (playing with the front shoulder seat belt) Sandra, we're nothing alike.

Sandra: When it gets right down to it. You followed your heart and I followed mine. (Lucas backs away and watches the police car take her away, hugging himself tightly)
