HELP Meeeeeeeee !
Windows 95 only I'm afraid
To adjust your sound settings check your volume settings first.
Double click on the little speaker icon near the time in the task bar
OR
CLICK START on the Task Bar | SELECT | PROGRAMS |
then | SELECT | ACCESSORIES |
then | SELECT | MULTIMEDIA |
then | SELECT | VOLUME CONTROL |
A window that looks like this should appear.
Make sure they are all turned up a bit.
Make sure the "MUTE" box isn't checked - this turns off all sound for each device.
Make sure "BALANCE" slider is in the middle.
Sometimes "ADVANCED" isn't there or doesn't work - dont worry.
NEVER serve spinache with ice-cream. It's FOUL.
Sometimes Windows lets you do things that you should not. Changing your audio settings MIGHT leave you with NO SOUND. Fortunately you wrote down your original settings - DIDN ' T YOU
Do you have a wavetable sound card ?
Yes / Don't know
( Sound Blaster 32, Vibra 32, AWE 32/64, Turtle Beach, etc )
Do This
If your midi files sound like crap, Windows and / or Games may be using the old fashioned FM synthesis to generate music. This is a dead ugly way to make music, but is often included for compatability reasons. To make sure you are getting the most out of a top end sound card, check your
"MIDI SETTINGS"
CLICK START on the Task Bar | SELECT | SETTINGS |
then | SELECT | CONTROL PANEL |
then | SELECT | MULTIMEDIA |
then | CLICK | "MIDI" tab |
Ignore the MPU401 if present ( I'm not getting into that )
Do NOT EVER select "EXTERNAL MIDI PORT" if present. That will push all midi music data out through the joystick port for connection to external synthesizers, drum machines, etc.
If there is an entry that uses the words OPL2, OPL3 or FM, it refers to the older method of sound production ( YUCK ).
OPL4 is new and flash - It's a hybrid synthesis method but I'm unsure about it. It should be OK.
Sound Blaster / Vibra people may have an option called "Creative Wave Effects Synthesizer" or similar. Select this if present to activate the midi wavetable device.
If you have another brand of wavetable card - Look for a device called "WAVE TABLE SYNTH" or something similar.
You may need to restart your computer.
Fortunately you bookmarked this site so you can easily find it again.
