This is the first of two pages covering the works of J. R. R. Tolkien. On this page you will find editions of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings for sale. To jump quickly to the second page, containing The Silmarillion and various other writings, click here.

Below you will find listings for individual books and book sets stocked by Amazon.com. Since each of these titles comes in more than one edition, I have tried to give you as much information as possible to help you make your selection. Note: A book graphic next to a title indicates that I personally have read and enjoyed this book. In fact, it may very well be in my own library.

You may scroll down the page to view all the options, or use the quick links below to jump straight to a certain title. (Links in the second column will carry you to the second page of Tolkien books.)

The Hobbit: Gandalf the wizard and a gang of gold-hungry dwarves draft Bilbo Baggins into service as their thief. Spiders, elves, Gollum, a Ring, and a dragon complicate his life even further. More lighthearted than Lord of the Rings, but just as essential to your Tolkienology.

The Fellowship of the Ring: Now that Bilbo's ring has been revealed as the most powerful tool of evil overlord Sauron, Bilbo's nephew Frodo sets out with a small (but growing) band of friends to try to destroy the thing.

The Two Towers: The Fellowship has been shattered and many members are missing and/or dead. Still the survivors struggle to reassemble and complete their quest. Lots of big battle scenes, if you like that sort of thing. Personally, my favorite part is the bit about the ents.

The Return of the King: The apocalyptic showdown between good and evil comes on two fronts: the battlefields of Minas Tirith, and the heart of Mordor--where Frodo and Sam make their last-ditch effort to destroy the Ring.

Boxed Sets: For your (and my) convenience, I'm using the common abbreviation "LOTR" for the three books of The Lord of the Rings.
