Star
Trek Cookbook
by Ethan Phillips and William J. Birnes
Is there one food that
humans, Klingons, Bajorans, and Vulcans would like? If so, what would it
taste like? How would you prepare it? Could you find all of the ingredients
locally?
This is the task
that faces Neelix, chef for the U.S.S. Voyager, every time he takes
on the challenge of trying to feed its crew of 140 food critics.
But over the course of their journey, Neelix's learned a few tricks of
the trade. He had to, just as a matter of self-preservation.
Ethan Phillips, in the
persona of Neelix, and William J. Birnes, the New York Times bestselling
co-author of The Day After Roswell, throw wide the vaults of interstellar
haute cuisine, revealing for the first time the secret preparation techniques
behind all those exotic dishes and drinks. The favorite foods of characters
from every Star Trek series and movie are here, all adapted for
easy use in twentieth-century kitchens.
The Star Trek Cookbook also
features a complete guide for whipping up the all the drinks served at
Quark's.
Not only fun, but also
easy to use, the Star Trek Cookbook is your indispensable guide
to the food of the stars!

The
Star Trek Scriptbooks: Becoming Human: The Seven of Nine Scripts
by Gene Roddenberry
Of all the diverse races and civilizations
encountered by Starfleet, none have been as fearsome and unstoppable as
the cybernetic life-form known as the Borg. Captain Jean-Luc Picard of
the Starship Enterprise considered them the closest thing to pure
evil that he had ever faced. So who could have guessed that an unrepentant
Borg could become a valuable crew member aboard a Federation starship?
Here, complete in one volume, are the scripts for the original episodes
of Star Trek: Voyager that brought Seven of Nine aboard Captain
Janeway's ship. These powerful and thought-provoking narratives trace
her tumultuous development from an anonymous Borg drone to an unique and
exceptional individual, whose rediscovery of her own lost humanity has
only just begun. Relive the drama and conflict that have made Seven of
Nine one of the most fascinating characters on television today -- and
in the depths of the Delta Quadrant.

The
Chronicles of Narnia Boxed Set
by C. S. Lewis and Pauline Banes
I have personally
read and heard this story and give these books my very highest recommendation
for all ages. I consider them treasures.
Amazon.com believes that
The
Chronicles of Narnia is a true masterpiece of the world's literature,
and I have never met anyone who has read it and feels otherwise. According
to Amazon, this is one of the very few sets of books that should be read
three times: in childhood, early adulthood, and late in life.
In brief, four children
travel repeatedly to a magical world in which they are far more than mere
children, sometimes royal heroes, and everything is far more than it seems,
sometimes astoundingly so. The story is richly told, populated with
fascinating characters, perfectly realized in detail of world and pacing
of plot, and profoundly allegorical, with continual threading of the timeless
issues of good and evil, faith and hope. This boxed set edition includes
all seven volumes of the story.

J.R.R.
Tolkien Boxed Set
by J. R. R. Tolkien
Includes these four books:
The Hobbit, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the
King.
This is the set of the
four famous and widely appreciated and praised fantasy titles by J. R.
R. Tolkien.
One reader from the USA
says, "My brothers introduced me to these books when I was a little girl
an I CAN'T GET OFF OF THEM! These books are great, but you can't just read
halfway through one book and then decide whether it's good or not. Read
the WHOLE SERIES, or you won't ever understand the true meaning of fantastic
literature! Don't let others fool you. THESE BOOKS ARE GREAT!!!!!! (But
the Bible beats them any day of the week[.])"
Another reader, from Princeton,
New Jersey, says, "There is no other place to look, and all fantasies,
for the next 100 years, will be judged against what Tolkien has achieved.
Beyond the scope of imagination exhibited here, what is MOST impressive
is the HUMAN element he brings to these stories...there is the pathos of
Aristotelian tragedy expressed here, and it deserves to be placed among
the legends of Greek/Roman mythology. There is a world created here, and
the reader is completetly immersed by the end of a single episode. Highly
recommended."

The
Testament
by John Grisham
Troy Phelan is a self-made
billionaire, one of the richest men in the United States. He is also eccentric,
reclusive, confined to a wheelchair, and looking for a way to die. His
heirs, to no one's surprise--especially Troy's--are circling like vultures.
Nate O'Riley is a high-octane
Washington litigator who's lived too hard, too fast, for too long. His
second marriage in a shambles, he is emerging from his fourth stay in rehab
armed with little more than his fragile sobriety, good intentions, and
resilient sense of humor. Returning to the real world is always difficult,
but this time it's going to be murder.
Rachel Lane is a young
woman who chose to give her life to God, who walked away from the modern
world with all its strivings and trappings and encumbrances, and went to
live and work with a primitive tribe of Indians in the deepest jungles
of Brazil.
In a story that mixes legal
suspense with a remarkable adventure, their lives are forever altered by
the startling secret of The Testament.

Snowflake
Bentley
by Jacqueline Briggs Martin; illustrated by Mary Azarian
Reading Level: Ages 4~8
Most children are captivated by snow, but
how many go on to make it their lifework? This beautiful biography, winner
of the 1999 Caldecott Medal, tells the true story of a Vermont farm boy
who was mesmerized by snowflakes. Wilson Bentley was fascinated by the
six-sided frozen phenomena, and once he acquired a microscope with a camera,
his childhood preoccupation took on a more scientific leaning. Bentley
spent his life taking countless exquisite photographs (many that are still
used in nature photography today), examining the tiny crystals and their
delicate, mathematical structures. Jacqueline Briggs Martin tells this
tale with simple, graceful prose that will engage children's imaginations.
Edifying and snowflake-scattered sidebars offer more information about
Bentley's methods and snowflake science. The artwork of Mary Azarian, whose
19th-century hand-press illustrations decorate the charming Barn Cat, shines
once again in Snowflake Bentley, with woodcuts that reveal an appreciation
for detail as well as for the man who loved snow. The lovely illustrations
and equally fresh text will inspire and comfort youngsters (and grownups
too) who wish they could capture snowflakes all year long. (Ages 4 to 8)

Holes
by Louis Sachar
Reading Level: Ages 12 and up
"If you take a bad boy
and make him dig a hole every day in the hot sun, it will turn him into
a good boy." Such is the reigning philosophy at Camp Green Lake, a juvenile
detention facility where there is no lake, and there are no happy campers.
In place of what used to be "the largest lake in Texas" is now a dry, flat,
sunburned wasteland, pocked with countless identical holes dug by boys
improving their character. Stanley Yelnats, of palindromic name and ill-fated
pedigree, has landed at Camp Green Lake because it seemed a better option
than jail. No matter that his conviction was all a case of mistaken identity,
the Yelnats family has become accustomed to a long history of bad luck,
thanks to their "no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather!"
Despite his innocence, Stanley is quickly enmeshed in the Camp Green Lake
routine: rising before dawn to dig a hole five feet deep and five feet
in diameter; learning how to get along with the Lord of the Flies-styled
pack of boys in Group D; and fearing the warden, who paints her fingernails
with rattlesnake venom. But when Stanley realizes that the boys may not
just be digging to build character--that in fact the warden is seeking
something specific--the plot gets as thick as the irony.
It's a strange story, but
strangely compelling and lovely too. Louis Sachar uses poker-faced understatement
to create a bizarre but
believable landscape--a place where Major
Major Major Major of Catch-22 would feel right at home. But while there
is humor and
absurdity here, there is also a deep understanding
of friendship and a searing compassion for society's underdogs. As Stanley
unknowingly begins to fulfill his destiny--the
dual plots coming together to reveal that fate has big plans in store--we
can't help but cheer
for the good guys, and all the Yelnats everywhere.
