The Parable of the Bycicle

For the kingdom of heaven shall be likened unto a little girl who wanted a bicycle. For behold, she went unto her father and said, "Daddy, I really want a bicycle." And he said unto her, "Well, if you work real hard and save all your money, maybe you can buy one." And behold, she was most joyous, and began from that hour to work most diligently.

For she did mow the lawn, and weed the garden, and did all manner of chores. And for these her parents did pay her small amounts. And she did also sell lemonade, and did go about, asking work of her neighbors.

As thus it was that after many weeks, she did go unto her father and said, "Daddy, I've worked hard, can we go get my bicycle now?" And he answered and said unto her, "Yes."

And so they drove into town and went unto the bicycle store. And the girl went and looked at the bicycles with joy in her heart, but behold, when she regarded the price tags, her joy was as naught, for while her money was numbered in dollars and cents, the prices of the bicycles were numbered by tens and hundreds of dollars.

And she did cry, and said unto her father, "Daddy, I don't have enough for any of these." and he did look upon her with compassion, saying "How much do you have?" And she showed him her money, and behold, he saw that it was insufficient to buy even so much as a tire.

But he did look upon her with compassion, and his heart was filled with mercy. So he said unto her, "Give me everything that you have, with a hug and a kiss, and I'll do the rest." So she did give unto him all that she had, even every last penny, and he took it, and went unto the sales clerk and did buy the bicycle.

And he drove home very slowly, for his daughter did ride her bicycle home, with much joy in her heart.

Now behold, we all are in need of that which we cannot buy, not with all our efforts. But there is one who has said unto us, "Give me all that you have, with a hug and a kiss, and I'll do the rest." So shall we give unto Him all that we have, even every penny, for He has paid our price. And behold, we shall one day go home to be with Him, with much joy in our hearts.

This is not an original story, but one that I learned in my seminary classes when I was in high school. I have re-told it here in my own words.
