THE FAMOUS STING PAGE!

EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE...

My FAVORITE singer on this planet is Sting, like that took a great stretch of the imagination! :) :)

Sting was born Gordon Matthew Sumner, on October 2, 1951, in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England. He is the oldest of four children. His father was the local milkman, and this job led Sting to owning a small dairy later on. As a student, he was medicore. In one year, he was caned at his schol a record 42 times!

Around age eight, he began learning how to play the guitar. Among his musical influences were The Beatles, Stax, Tamala, Bob Dylan, and his early bass hero Jack Bruce.

In 1969, he qualifed for university, but was uninspired and came home after less than a month. He spent the next couple of years drifting through some jobs. By 1971, Sitng had trained as a teacher and rather enjoyed the job

Around this time, Stin began playing bass for a college rock group called Earthrise. In 1974, he formed Last Exit with three other friends. Two years later, the band was still playing in local pubs. The same year, he married his first wife, Frances Tomelty. IN October of that year, Sting's first son, Joe was born.

In 1977, the Police was first formed. The band consisted of Stewart Copeland, who brought it all together, Sting, and a guitarist named Henri Padovani. By February, their first single Fallout/Nothing Acheiving was recorded, and released in May. In July, Andy Summers joined the group and in August Henri left the band. Thus began the 9-year run of the Police. Over that span, they would have 8 UK # 1 singles, 5 US singles in the top three, 3 UK # 1, 1 US #1, 1 US #2 albums, 7 Grammies, and various UK music awards.

By 1986, the band officially broke up with the remix of Don't Stand So Close to Me. Sting went on to forge a successful solo career. In 1986 He released his first solo album Dream of the Blue Turtles. In 1987, Nothing like the Sun made UK 1, and US 9. Andy Summers guested on the album, playing guitar for one of the album's songs. Sting's mother, Audrey, died of cancer while Sting was in Montserrat recording Nothing Like the Sun at the time and refused to fly back for the funeral, because he did not want to turn it into a media circus. Instead, he dedicated the album to her. Sting's father, Eric, died of cancer shortly thereafter. Sting was in Brazil touring for Nothing Like the Sun at the time. He later wrote and dedicated some of the music from The Soul Cages to his father. His next album, in 1991, Soul Cages made it to UK 1 and US 2 on the charts. His next effort would be Ten Summoner's Tales in 1993, which made it to #2 on both the US & UK charts. A couple of years later saw a Best of compilation, and last year a new album, Mercury Falling.

Sting is currently married to Trudie Styler, whom he had lived with for nearly ten years before marrying her in 1992. Sting has six children, two with his first wife and four with Trudie.

Sting has also been involved in various films such as Dune, Stormy Monday, Julia Julia, and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. Last year, he starred in a movie which Sting's wife Trudie directed and in which Sting acts (which has been released in England in early 1996) will be released in the U.S. under the title Gentlemen Don't Eat Poets
