COMMUNITY SERVICE
This page is for sharing our efforts to touch our community. Service is one of of core principles. Our on-going efforts include:
Collecting cancelled postage stamps.
This is a former Chase Masterson (Leeta: DS9) charity. Collectors buy the stamps, no matter how common, looking for valuable ones. The money raised goes to fund pack animals to get medicines delivered to remote areas of the Third World. The Kelly is a regular stamp donor, and one of the largest contributors.
Collecting aluminum can pull-tabs.
The pull tabs from soft drink cans are made of aluminum just like the cans. Our tabs are given to Ronald McDonald house who recycles them to help fund their operation. By donating just the tabs; people can keep their cans for personal or other recyling programs.
The Great Salt Lake Chili Affair
This is an annual event where some of the best chefs in town make huge pots of gourmet chili. All monies raised go to the local homeless shelter to fund sheltering, health, job, and educational programs sponsored by Travelers Aid Society. Two of our Senior Officers serve on the event board, and many of us volunteer at the event.

Hospital Visits
Periodically we will go to a childrens' hospital in uniform to read to the kids, or do other activity projects. They enjoy it almost as much as we do.
Blood Drives
The U.S.S. Kelly supports the semi-annual Robert A. Heinlein Memorial Blood Drive. in conjuction with the annual All-Fandom gathering known as CONduit
When Robert Heinlein was Guest of Honor at the Saltcon SF Convention (in Salt Lake City) in 1977, he asked for neither expenses nor appearance fee. Instead he asked Saltcon to hold a blood drive, and that every fan wanting his autograph try to give blood. In his memory, CONduit has sponsored two blood drives a year since 1991. (CONduit's blood drive is named after Robert Heinlein with Virginia Heinlein's gracious permission.)
In January of 2004 we participated in a blood drive sponsored by Paramount/UPN, Star Trek: Enterprise, and The American Red Cross.
Olympic Involvement
The U.S.S. Kelly actively encouraged individual members to volunteer with the 2002 Winter Olympics, held here in Salt Lake City. We are proud of those who accepted this challenge. The club also supported the Olympics by purchasing a Commemorative Brick for the Olympic Legacy Plaza. Click on the link to see the details.
