Episode 3: The Leptam System

Part 3: The Imperial Compound, the Asteroid Base, and Betrayal

GM's Note: This session was one of the most fun we played yet...I let the group play spy and do some espionage...it was a riot!

Deenis declines to go on the mission, saying that she has some other business to attend to. She accompanies the group in her personal ship. They land five kilometers from the base, flying low to the ground to avoid detection. Upon leaving the ship, they find a strange data disc fastened to the back of the hatch of the Kestrel II with a New Republic symbol on it. The disc couldn't be used with the Kestrel II's onboard system. It required a large planetary or military system, so the group had to wait to check it out. Estalan went out to spy on the location. He got within 3 kilometers and found two AT-ST patroling. Ducking low to the ground he looked past them with his high-powered macrobinoculars to see a military and production facility right where the sensor blip of the freighter disappeared. A Lambda-class shuttle left the facility's landing pad and went to orbit. Sunrider went back to the ship to share this information. Daala and Dynasty went out to meet him. When they returned, they found Deenis rummaging through the cargo hold of the Kestrel II. Daala managed to get out of her that she was looking for the disc, but she explained that she was just really anxious to get some information. She apologized and left, leaving the group a lot more suspicious of her "friendly" association with them.

Later that night, the group decided that Koryo, still having some old Imperial ID's, should penetrate the facility and try to find out some information of what is going on. He got through the outer patrols and dug a hole under the fence of the facility, squeezing under it. He noticed that the facility had a huge domed building connected to a hexagonal main building. He went to a garage for land assault vehicles and managed to Con the guard there to let him. He proceeded into the facility and noticed a restricted hallway that lead to the dome and the manufacture of an Interplanetary Turbolaser designed to destroy the base of the Leptam Republican Army on the Moon "Hutt's Jackpot" that orbited Leptam. Armed with this new information, Koryo saw the need to destroy the huge weapon and exited the facility to get reinforcements.

Getting into the facility this time would be a serious problem as it was daylight, although the group had this problem solved for them. Somehow, the Imps had been alerted to their presence. Sunrider tracked a Freerunner assault skiff moving towards them as they walked towards the facility. They hid in a nearby cave. The Freerunner crew met up with a huge volley of blaster fire when they entered the cave and didn't leave it alive again. Sunrider lured the remaining freerunner pilot into the cave and made short work of him. The group dressed in the clothes of the Freerunner crew and used the Freerunner to enter the facility.

Once inside, the group found the records room. The documents explained about the Interplanetary Turbolaser, and identified Arexal Deenis as a traitor and double agent of the Planet's Administrator, Deesna Fen. Deenis's betrayal must have been how the Imps found out that they were approaching the station! She betrayed their location! This new information angered the group. They wanted Deenis for betraying them. They also found out from the guards posted outside the Interplanetary Turbolaser that a trap for them was being set. They quietly disposed of the guards and went into the room to check out the Turbolaser. It was fake! They realized the whole idea behind the Interplanetary Turbolaser was to capture them. Deenis had lured them there! They dropped a few thermal detonators into the domed area and went for the freerunner. They got out of the gate just before the Imps realized who they were.

When the group got back to the ship, they noted that a Skipray Blastboat had been sent to intercept them. Exchanging a few shots, they managed to escape only because, to their surprise, the Winged Messenger showed up to provide them cover fire. The Winged Messenger was piloted by Daala's old friend and partner Bandos Lima. Lima quickly explained that the Imps were a threat to him in this Sector, so he joined the LRA. He guided them to the Leptam Republican Army Base on an asteroid orbiting "Hutt's Jackpot". They wondered why the Imperials thought the base was on the satellite itself. When they reached the asteroid, Cornholio translated for Graxaad. He was not aware of Deenis's betrayal until he overheard a personal message between her and Fen. Graxaad then promptly arrested her, even though she was his friend. By working with her, his Honor had been tarnished and he wanted justice. The group went to the jail after Daala arranged for a salvaged generator to be installed in the Kestrel II. It took the group a lot of effort to prevent Daala from killing Deenis.

Deenis explained that the only reason she did this was because Fen had her parents arrested and threatened their death. She explained that she still believed in getting the Empire out of the system and had lied to Fen about the location of the Army. She had the Asteroid fitted with a powerful sensor mask that prevented the Empire from detecting them. With this new information, the group made an uneasy truce with Deenis and agreed to help her rescue her parents. With that done, they could trust her more, and the Leptam Republican Army would still have a valuable leader. After all, the group couldn't argue with the organization's cause.

The group now had the time to read the disc left by the NR agent, and the equipment (the Asteroid Base Computer Core) to do it. They found some very valuable information. The Imperial facility was actually a major facility manufacturing shield generators for TIE Interceptors bound for systems documented on the disc. Getting this disc to New Republic Intelligence as soon as possible was imperative.
