Angel: Moments #2
B'Elanna
Kathryn invited me for breakfast this morning. That's not so unusual. Not
anymore. But she told me to let myself in if she wasn't out of the shower
yet when I got there. She wasn't so I did.
I felt almost like an intruder when I stepped inside. It was, well, the only
word I can think of is intimate. I'd never seen her quarters anything but
immaculate, but there were two coffee cups on the end table and a pink
sweater on the back of the couch. And there was faint scent in the air that
I'd never noticed in her room before. It was like--- I allowed myself a
little smile as I recognized it. Sometimes being part Klingon isn't so bad.
I wouldn't have known without the slightly sharper senses. Not for sure
anyway.
Then I heard the shower shut off and soon Kathryn came through the bedroom
door wrapped in a white terry cloth robe. She was bare foot and she carried
her brush in her hand. Her hair was wet and tousled. She was beautiful.
"Good morning." she said, smiling. She sat down beside me and began brushing
out the tangles while we talked. We decided on coffee, strawberries and
croissants and visited right through our meal. Visited about everything
*but*! Still, I'd never seen her so quietly, joyfully peaceful. Finally she said
it.
"I was going to make the 'Big Announcement' over breakfast, but you already
know, don't you."
I nodded and smiled, suddenly feeling a little misty.
She smiled back. It was like sunshine breaking through the clouds. Pure and
bright. "It was wonderful." she said very softly. And that was all.
I had to leave for my shift and she needed to get ready too, so she walked
to the door with me. I stopped and just looked at her for a moment, feeling
awkward. I wanted to *say* something, *do* something so she'd know how happy
I was for her. For both of them.
"B'Ella?" I know her. She used that silly nickname Tom's stuck me with on
purpose. To remind me that we were friends. Real friends. So I'd know it was
alright.
The words wouldn't come. So I did the only thing I could think of. I reached
for her and hugged her hard. Just for a few seconds. I was almost surprised
when I felt her arms go around me too. Then I stepped back. I'd never done
that before. Not to anybody. Not quite like that.
It amazes me that a woman who can command through a battle can be so gentle.
She touched my cheek so I'd look at her. Reassurance.
"I'll see you later." she said and I left. But I carried the memory of this
morning with me all day. I'll carry it forever.
