Who we are not
We are not debunkers, skeptibunkers, or whatever else you might like to
call people who think that the whole topic of UFOs is silly. We think that
UFOs really do exist - but we define a "UFO" as an unidentified
flying object, nothing more.
Who we are
We are skeptical that UFOs are alien spaceships or that they represent
any other intelligently directed, non-prosaic phenomenon. We do not deny
that intelligent life could very well exist elsewhere in the universe,
or even that it might be capable of visiting the Earth, but we are not
convinced by the evidence offered so far in support of alien visitations.
What we think
We are not interested so much in UFOs as in UFOlogy. UFOs are by
definition unidentified and we believe that each sighting has to
be examined on its own merits. We do not believe that there is one common
explanation for all UFO sightings.
We think that the real "UFO phenomenon" is UFOlogy itself,
what people believe about UFOs and why they believe it.
What we do
We follow the discussion about UFOs on USENET and in the media, we discuss
UFOs and UFOlogy, and we comment where appropriate.
Our mission
We want to depolarize and depersonalize the discussion of UFOs - to represent
a moderating influence and to encourage a more open-minded debate about
the real identity of UFOs. We are also interested in UFOlogy as a sociopsychological
phenomenon - as mythology in the making.
At the same time we remain open to the notion that UFOs really might
be alien space ships. But we do not feel that the proponents of this
hypothesis (which we consider to be just one of many possibilities) have
proved their case yet.
The Review is the means by which IUFOS members express their commonly held
opinions. It also accepts article submissions from non-members on both
sides of the UFO debate.
