Ruin Explorer
For the Sake of Knowledge
Description
The Ruin Explorer is an academic who uses his Rogue skills to
find and recover lost artifacts.
The RE must have an Int of 13.
Preferred Skills
The RE's skills are those that pertain to crawling through
the tombs of lost civilizations. Opening Locks and Finding
Traps are the quintessential skills of the Ruin Explorer. Also,
see the notes under "Benefits" and "Drawbacks", below.
Role
The RE is interested in the quest for knowledge and
artifacts, not mere money. This is what differentiates him most
from the typical "Adventurer Thief".
REs often work in the employ of temples or sages who are
looking for specific items or information. Usually, the RE will
work with/for an organization with compatible goals, but may
also take employment with those who are not so altruistic in
their motives. (Consider Indiana Jones and his various rivals,
esp. Belloc and Elsa.)
Often, the RE spends much of his "down time" in academic
settings, arguing theories of history with other scholars.
Weapon Proficiencies
The RE has no special notes to his Weapon Proficiencies.
Non-Weapon Proficiencies
Bonus: Reading/Writing
Recommended: All Academic (which can be bought at their normal
cost).
Equipment
Most REs take special care to keep equipment appropriate for
spontaneous dungeon-crawls on hand at all times, but this is
merely prudence, not a requirement.
Benefits
The difference in motivations also provides a significant
difference in abilities from most Thief kits. First and
foremost, the RE can Read Languages starting at first level
(although his base chance is still 0%).
Secondly, the RE gains double the experience points for "art"
or "historical" items found in his adventures, provided those
items are kept for personal study or turned over to an academic
institution or an appropriate temple. If they are simply sold,
there is no XP benefit.
Finally, the RE gains a +2 reaction bonus from other scholars,
including scribes, sages and other Academic Kit characters.
Drawbacks
Because of his lack of interest in mere money, the RE does not
acquire the knack for Picking Pockets until fifth level, and
then starts at 0%.
Secondly, the RE does not gain the usual individual award for
"cash" treasure found, although he might gain some points from
old or rare coinage, if it is turned over as above. Note that
this rule only applies if you normally award XPs for monetary
treasure value.
Wealth
Ruin Explorers start out with the usual wealth.
Race
Any race is appropriate for the Ruin Explorer kit.
