The CPC6128
In some ways, this humble computer's value has remained undimmed by the passing years.
It might be slow and cumbersome with only sixteen colours, but just downloading the emulator and a couple of classic games is enough to demonstrate its timeless quality.
Of course, some games stand the test of time better than others. Games hailed in their day as graphical masterpieces (Gemini Wing, Golden Axe and Knight Force) now fall far short because they are slow and difficult to control; all the effort put into graphics which no longer cut the mustard anyway.
No. It is the simpler games which remain as strong as ever. Puzzle games in the Tetris mould are particularly strong on the Amstrad. Platform games are also great. Part of their appeal is that no one makes this kind of game to a professional standard these days, in the wake of Lara Croft et al. The following are all games which just have to be experienced.
Spitting Image
A combat game with a difference. Satirefighter II.
Cybernoid II.
This is Art. Cool weapons, too.
Rick Dangerous II.
Platform game needing hair-trigger timing. Tomb Raider '88
Laser Squad.
The original X-Com game. However, this has a 2 player mode.
Batman.
Isometric platform game. Twelve years old and still better than Clooney.
Dizzy.
He had to get in somewhere. Get off the treasure island, etc. Cool.
E-motion.
Play at particle physics. Dangerously addictive and frustrating.
Head Over Heels.
The greatest game in the history of computing.
Anything missing from the list? Let me know!
