When the RDF was split into the Terrestrial PKF and the Spaceborne REF, a need for individual battlefield protection became a priority. Both of these organizations turned to the Robotech Research Institue to fill this requirement.
The RRI scientists originally tried to make use of the standard torso protective vests of the late 20th and the early 21st centuries, albeit incorporating full environmental protection along the lines of NBC/exposure suits. This approach was quickly proven unsatisfactory as the level of protection was simply not sufficient against the increasingly powerful weapons being developed.
The RRI then tried to find a "one-size-fits-all" powered armor that could fit the bill, but the costs and varied requirements of these militaries precluded this approach as well. The answer for the REF was found to be the modular CVR-3 series and the Cyclone Veritech mecha. The PKF, mostly due to political reasons did not follow the REF's procurement of this system and instead demanded thier own system. The RRI simply used the same technology to fill their order.
The PKF series of full body armor protective suits are all individually fitted hard shell suits formed primarily of titanium alloys and boron alloy ceramic plates, exactly the same as the REF CVR series. Since both armors use the same materials in their construction, they both have the thermal damage resistance provided by the Boron alloy ceramics.
The major departure from the REF series armor is that the PKF series is not designed to be used as a modular system for the use of mecha augmentation such as the Cyclone. The PKF series are instead designed to be used independently, with a variety of "add-on" packages, including sheilds amd backpacks of various natures.
The new style armors are much stronger and more damage resistant than previous systems. The actual stopping power vs energy are similar to Class V hard armor vest, but due to the amount of material used the ablative properties of hard armor is significantly reduced. In the past when hard armor was penetrated by an attack, there was a subsequent reduction in the stopping power against further attacks. This is still a problem with the new style armored suits, but it is greatly reduced.
In effect an attack must first penetrate the suit's armor, then penetrate the suit's internal systemry before doing injury to the operator. Note that even thought the PKF has instituted a complicated system of denoting rank by virtue of the size and number of crests, horns, and ridges on the helmet, versions of a suit within a class are identical except in aesthetics.
PKF/ASC Armor Specs:
Special attachments available for the PKF armor system.
Backpacks
Utility belts
Combat Sheilds: These are made using the same thermal reistant ceramics and thus take only half damage from thermal weapons
