The SDR-040MK XIII Spartan (Phalanx is the designation for foreign sales), is the unsurpasses leader in destructive capability. With it battery of long and medium range missiles, there can be no denying the power of this mech in destoying massed formations of enemy men, mecha and equipment.
The Spartan is also perhaps the most limited of all the mecha designs. With no secondary weapons systems, poor speed, low armor, and mo manipulative ability, this mech must be constantly protected and/or kept far removed from the front lines of the conflict.
There was no argument about the development of this mech. The Spartan is designed for one thing and does it extemely well. Destroy things at long range is what this mech does. In actual combat deployments, this mech is organized into sections. Each section is composed of 2 Spartans and 2 Gladiators (used to reload the Spartans and provide close range security). Every two sections is commanded by 1 M.A.C. II. Artillery batteries are seldom grouped together, as it is hard to imagine a target that could stand up to a bombardment from 4 Spartans and a M.A.C. II.
