It has come to my attention that there many people who are confused as to the nature of this site and the presence of so much "Genre Cross Over". After a few e-mail conversations, I think that I may as well explain myself. Well, this is site focused of ROBOTECH, the show that began my descent into anime. All of the other pieces and pages on this site are there in order to support the game world of the ROBOTECH RPG. This is why...
1. I don't like the Robotech Masters being idiots and the few shots/descriptions of their culture seem to be too vague and way too Greco/Roman. Half the time I keep expecting Tirolian to end up being Latin. So I think that a darker, but still Imperial Roman feel, is to be had by conbining GW's excellent Warhammer 40,000 setting and FASA's (I believe defunct) setting of Renegade Legion Not only that, but I like the acronym TOG.
2. The Invid as written are just lame. The Regent is the only cool thing about them; well, them and the evolved type 6's. I think that the Invid need more variety and thus I'm giving them that. The Genesis pits can make anything, right? So why not things like Gene Stealers and Tyrannids?
3. Most of the Sentinels aliens are crap, with the exceptions being the Perytonians, Garudans and the Haydonites. The mystical Haydon storyline out of the novels fits wonderfully into the Warhammer 40,000 setting (Haydon = The Eternal Emperor and Haydon IV, the artificial planet could be the resting place of the Golden Throne) and thus acts a good bridge between them. Not only that but there should lots and lots of alien races, not 5. And they were all beaten by the Masters and the Invid anyway, so they probably don't have much juice behind them anymore (Read: political/military power). BTW, who doesn't like the Vorlons/Shadows?
4. This whole Zor thing leaves me real confused. I think that most anime purists are in agreement that proto-culture is exactly that, the culture before this one (Robotech Masters, possibly the Marduk?), not some sort of alchemical substance gained by putting a weed in stasis. Therefore instead of having Zor be a lone conspirator and sending the ship to some unknown planet for some unknown reason, I mixed in the elements from a good book, _StarStrike_ (by W. Micheal Gear in case you're interested). So why did Zor do it? Well, I don't know, but I got some ideas. Because of my old Mage: the Ascension Chronicle wherein I was a Void Engineer Technomancer, I have decided to interweave the two genres together as well.
5. The visions of Zor sort of puts it in the mystical (read: World of Darkness/Call of C'thulu) genre. Why not? It works well enough in the world of anime to mix and match genres. It it not meant to ever even come in contact with ROBOTECH storylines, it's just there as a background or a reason "why" on the cosmic (events that happened when TOG was being formed, 40,000+ years ago!!) scale. It's just an element of the world. Many people have expressed displeasure at the mixing of C'thulu and Robotech, well check out Macross 7, and look at the Protodevlin. They sure as hell look C'thulu-ish to me.
6. As for integrating Star Trek, ever see the alternate dimension episodes where the Federation is evil? If so, they would make a great villanous force, would they not? Actually I think that I'm going to create the Star Trek and Star Wars rip offs as sort of add-ons. Use 'em if you like, or don't if you don't. I promise that this stuff will be totally stand alone.
7. The Babylon 5 stuff (when I make it) is staying though. All that I'm doing for that is using the name/designs/aliens but none of the text of the show. I think that having a Sentinels type organization having a permanenet base that acts as a meeting point for all the allied people is a great idea. Granted I don't like the Minbari-Earth war, or any that in my world, so it won't show up.
8. Aliens. Ah, my favorite movie of all time. Change the name of the United States Colonial Marine Corps to the REF, and voila. Besides the M41A1 10mm Pulse Rifles seem to be mega damage weapons to me. The setting as given is perfect. The Aliens are a created species that escaped and are now rampant on serveral planets. The Aliens were found in a ship that was originally crewed by a race of humanoid giants. Sound like Zentraedi to me. Another thing to do, is have the USCMC still be a part of the US military (how that happens, I leave to you) circa Southern Cross/Sentinels. I have a small "data briefing" along those lines which you might find interesting here.
9. The ROBOTECH II: The Sentinels book as written, has no information on setting besides some adventure ideas. Why not rip off stuff I like? As long as continuity is maintained (which my beloved ROBOTECH doesn't have in the least. It started out as three seperate series for cryin' out loud and degenerated from there) I say it's cool.
10. I can say that there will be no Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, etc. sort of stuff here. Not that I dislike them (I like the both of them actually), but they are not cool enough to be ROBOTECH source material, even if Fujita is one little bad ass.
Anyway in my games, balance is the key. It's just about what the players want. If you want it, it's here.
