The Basic Strategies for Survival

Cancer the Crab: (Armor and Tanks, Forts and Castles, Caves and Hideouts, and all sorts of Security Systems.) Armor is the best defense against superior speed and agility. If you can not outrun the enemy, find a place to hunker down. Shields neutralize weapons. The crab's shell protects it from predators, but it weighs him down and he is vulnerable when he outgrows his shell. Also he can be trapped inside his own shell, unable to escape. It becomes his coffin.

Gemini the Twins: (Bonding, Partnership, Monogamy, Nuclear Family, Growth and Sharing of Responsibility.) Sometimes bonding to develop confidence and intimacy is the best way to draw defensive people out of their shells. But a small alliance can get run over when it meets the juggernaut of a major power alliance.

Taurus the Bull: (Organization, Teamwork, Conglomerate, Franchise, Polygamous and/or Extended Family with a Boss or Chief.) A large operation efficiently wielding wealth and power can defeat smaller operations and sometimes even those its own size or larger, but remains vulnerable to a determined challenge by a tough rebel or competitor.

Aries the Ram: (Challenge of Authority, Rebellion, Tenacity, or its flip side, Timid Obedience). A challenger with guts and determination sometimes can knock out the big guy on the block. A successful rebel can even change the rules of the game. But ultimately he can not stand up to the power of sheer numbers if the majority ultimately rejects his challenge of the paradigm. In that case his best survival option may be to surrender and go along with the flock in acceptance of the ruling authority.

Pisces the Fish: (Reproductive Power, Sheer Numbers.) Sheer numbers can overwhelm even the most tenacious challenger. Also a large population sometimes willingly sacrifices a portion of itself to attain a survival goal. The main weakness of a large population is its continuing need for resources, food, water, and services.

Aquarius the Water Bearer: (Resources, Food, Water, and/or Services.) Those capable of producing and delivering abundance of resources control large populations by meeting their huge market demands and needs, but are easily defrauded by cheats and pretenders who hide in the midst of plenty in order to feed surreptitiously on excess and oversight.

Capricorn the Serpent Goat: (Camouflage, Disguise, Subterfuge, Pretense, Deceit, Fraud, Espionage, and Entertainment.) Pretenders can get away with fraud temporarily when there is a plentiful supply of something with market demand, but must watch the scale of their operations. If their impact gets too large, their parasitic presence can be exposed by technology and neutralized by sophisticated weapons. One major socially acceptable aspect of survival by pretense is the entertainment industry. Large populations generally live steeped in a boring conventionality. They willingly pay those who skillfully offer them the experience of vicarious fantasies, escapism, and clever artistry.

Sagittarius the Archer: (Skills, Technology, Weapons, and Tools.) Weapons and tools enhance capabilities. They can be used to attack any survival system, and are especially effective for identifying and attacking fraudulent and deceptive activities, but their additional technical complexity makes them easy prey to sabotage, poisons, and viruses.

Scorpio the Scorpion: (Sabotage, Poisons, and Viruses.) Some organisms use sabotage, toxins and viruses for defense or offense. This sometimes involves kamikaze suicide missions, as exemplified by bees that eviscerate themselves when stinging enemies. For such strategies to be effective, they often must focus an attack on a highly localized area, such as a weak or sensitive spot or a highly complex system. Such attacks can be neutralized and defeated by increasing the adaptability and conditioned reflexes of the organism or system. Also, when used on too large a scale, Scorpionic strategies sometimes tend to get out of hand and backfire on the user in the form of self-injury or massive retaliation.

Libra the Balance: (Homeostasis, Balance, and Adaptability.) Adaptability enables organisms to maintain homeostasis against the insidious tactics of sabotage and germ or chemical warfare. Bacteria and viruses are among the most adaptable of all organisms, but they do not usually attack each other. They either feed on inorganic resources or more complex organisms. Humans also are highly adaptable, but they have a curious habit of attacking each other, which distinguishes them from bacteria. A highly adaptable organism can be pulled off its balance when enticed by the seductive attraction of bait that is highly desirable to it.

Virgo the Virgin: (Slipperiness, Seductive Charm; Control of Secrets and other Hidden Assets of Great Value.) Seduction derives its attractive power by offering desirable bait, by controlling and/or hiding something of value to the target, often with a trap attached to the bait. The bait could be information, sex, food, or any other resource with survival value or some other highly desirable feature. However, the seductress herself may fall prey to a greater source of charm or an opponent with extreme strength, speed, and agility.

Leo the Lion: Charismatic Leadership, Athletic Prowess, Speed, and Agility. Speed and athletic agility can overcome slipperiness or secrecy, but may be stymied by a tightly secure organism that refuses to play as in the case of Cancer, the Crab.

Conclusion: Each survival strategy has at least one weak point and may be overcome by one or more of the other strategies. The back-feeding linkage of the various survival strategies tends to cycle without end. From a broader perspective (geologic time, for example) the law of survival is the law of extinction. Almost all species known to have existed on Earth are currently found only as fossils. Perhaps there is more to life than mere survival.
