Alta Island

Alta is a small island that is moderately populated by a people known as the Altans. They are a primarily sea-faring race based from the coastal city of Yas.

The population of Yas is roughly 25,000 various humanoids and mutants. Like nearly all communities, this one also tends to shun technology. While a good innovation to existing technology may be embraced, anything 'high tech' is frowned upon.

The people of Alta are a robust, generally cheerful bunch of merchants, aristrocrats and artisans. While their ships are primitive and oar-powered, they boast one of the biggest navies in the entire sea. While they aren't openly hostile and prefer to trade for wealth, they defend their ports and cities fiercely.

Although they enjoy a multi-tiered society, no slaves are allowed on Alta. The island is considered 'holy' and therefore above such things as slavery. However, slaves are used freely in all other ports. Alta is also known for its various strange 'rites' and religious ceremonies. The primary religion is worship of two dieties; Vian, The Destroyer and Ardis, Holy Mother. Most rites center around Ardis naturally. In Altan mythos, it is said that the people enjoyed an easy life of splendor under the eyes of Ardis and Vian; one day though, Vian grew jealous of the people's love for Ardis and set out to destroy them. So terrible was his fury that half of Alta was plunged beneath the sea before Ardis chased him away. It is prophesied that one day Vian shall come forth again to battle Ardis.

All maidens of 14 years may volunteer for special training in the Temple of Ardis for becoming Holy Dancers.
