How much MIDI gear do you have?
Those OUTs & THRUs playing havoc with recording multiple keyboards into the sequencer?
Not enough OUTs for your INs?
Want to avoid daisy-chain delays?
Need to control MIDI sound processors 100 feet away?
WANT TO DO IT CHEAP?!?
There are three styles of MIDI PALS currently available:
- Plain $20 - this is a box with three MIDI jacks all wired together. Generally used as a splitter. All 5 pins plus chassis ground are wired. You can use this box for a merger, but since it's not intelligent, it's not recommended!
- Switched $25 - this is a box with three MIDI jacks connected via a switch (A/B and Common). The switch is a 6 pole 2 position break-before-make switch. ALL lines including chassis ground are switched separately.
- XLR $35 - This is a pair of boxes, each with a MIDI jack, one with a male XLR, one with a female XLR. Need to run your MIDI from soundboard to stage? Use an XLR converter and run it through your snake!

The Plain and Switched varieties are from old stock, but are gauranteed by me. They're in unopened packages with warranty cards and instructions. I was a partner of Transient Technologies, Inc. a number of years ago and when the company disbanded I came away with the MIDI PALS stock among a few other things. The XLR boxes are a new invention that I needed in my band, Ezekiel's Wheel. We control our voice processor from the computer on stage and needed a way to run a MIDI line the 75 feet to the soundboard. BUT (I hear you say) the MIDI spec says is only runs 25 feet! Well, yeah, it says that, but I've never seen a dropped MIDI message over my snake, generally running about 100 feet. The reason is the electrical specifications for MIDI. Basically they're the same as your telephone (5milliamp current loop) and that runs THOUSANDS of feet between your house and the switch. You might (if you hooked up an oscilloscope) see that the nice square pulses from the MIDI transmitter get rounded off a bit and the level might attenuate a bit, but, like I said, I've never seen a dropped message.
