Introduction
This is the amateur Doctor Who film that has been in production in Sussex
for quite some time now.
This is a team effort; the trio responsible being Ashley Nealfuller, David
Clarke and Stephen
Cranford.
The final 12 minute segment from Episode 5 featured the Third Doctor, and
we were extremely
proud to have the original actor JON PERTWEE to play the part!
This segment, with a brief story synopsis/trailer preceding it, was shown
TWICE at the
PANOPTICON 96 at Coventry this October. Firstly for about four hundred people
at the start of
one of the interview panels, and then later added to the schedules and shown
at 3pm to an audience
of about 1500 ! This was a very proud moment for all involved. We have also
been made aware of
the paragraph about us in the Christmas issue of SFX. Incredible!
Other Publicity
On the strength of the showing of the pre-Pertwee story synopsis at the Convention,
we have been
contacted with a view to a magazine article being written about us. We are
again, naturally honoured,
though nothing will happen until we are ready with our next stage set and
next batch of filming. When
we are ready, we will hopefully be interviewed! As we do not want to jeopardise
this welcome
publicity, no more news will be available on this matter until after the (hopeful)
event.
The Story
Again, we don't want to give too much away, though as the trailer has been
seen at the Convention, it
is no secret the Daleks are involved.
However, keen fans will know that they didn't feature a great deal in the
BBC's
"Genesis of the Daleks" - and so their exact involvement (and number!)
in our story
will remain a mystery at this juncture! We have other delights for the Doctor
and his
companions - the first of which (the first episode's climax, in fact) is something
quite
remarkable (and secret!).
The story involves the Doctor being taken out of his time-stream, mid way
through his enforced
regeneration after his second incarnation. As the regeneration had been interrupted,
his appearance is
locked mid-way between two Doctors. This interim Doctor is given a history,
some companions, and
a test to complete (only he doesn't know he's doing it).
He must try to come to terms with what is real, and what is imagined, if he
is to retain his sanity. As
he gets embroiled into his enemy's trap, he tries to work out who he can trust.
The story title is "Devious", which gives hint towards the many
plot twists and turns.
The action involves more than one time period, and as the story grows to a
climax, we find how
events in the future start to affect the events from the past!
Time
Time is our limiting factor! And money perhaps - though not our imagination!
The story was written
by David and Ashley without filming considerations in mind. We didn't want
to compromise the
storyline with what was possible - rather we were concerned that the story
worked. In hindsight,
with the advent of computer effects and editing etc we are glad this was the
decision we took - since
we are now able to use these computer effects to tell parts of the story that
would have seemed
impossible - like the space scenes for example!
As Amateurs, we only work on occasional weekends and evenings. We generally
meet during the
week to work on the script (we believe in altering it right up until filming!),
and we generally film at a
weekend. Whether it is in a set or on location, we only seem to film a few
times during the year!
We are all busy individuals, and have full and interesting (??) lives outside
of this project, which is
why we have been on this project for about 5 years (!!!!!) Still, we believe
the final thing will be
worth it (we hope!). Even the few times a year (lately) we do get to film,
we have had to spend many
weeks in preparation. Sets and props all need construction, as does the script,
and the actors need
rehearsal!
Design, Sets and Props
The Design of the whole film is always under careful consideration - we are
concerned that each
stage of the story has a definite feel about it. Only a couple of sets must
look like the BBC originals,
and these have been well achieved we feel. However, much of the rest of the
project is left to our
own imagination.
Although the new sets are being designed on computer using Lightwave, it is
still necessary to build
the bulk of the sets. At present there are only a few sets left to be built
- the ubiquitous corridors -
and a large black room (!); and the forthcoming set - another Tardis Interior
(the third!). This Tardis
interior uses as a basis the one that was constructed for the Pertwee scene,
though it will be heavily
altered. That set was a faithful copy of the BBC original - the console itself
was an accurate copy,
and has been praised not only by Jon, but by other BBC staff connected with
the series!
Ashley and Stephen generally build the sets - the full size Tardis console
was the most challenging so
far!
A full size Tardis Police Box exterior prop was also constructed by Stephen,
even though it is barely
featured!
The Dalek outer casings were adapted and built by Ashley a year or two ago,
and are exact copies
of the BBC versions from the late 1960s.
Since their initial construction, Stephen has installed in one of them a motor
from an old electric
wheelchair - in conjunction with a 24 volt battery supply, one of the daleks
now has motive power
and a voicebox! When he gets time (and hopefully in time for the major Dalek
scenes), Ashley will
be installing a similar voicebox and motor in one of the others in similar
fashion! The rest of the
Daleks will be mute, though all voices will be done by computer-treated voices
in the final edit
anyway.
The main problem with the sets and props is one of storage!. At present, the
actor who plays the
Doctor has a Dalek on loan - Stephen has one, and Ashley has the rest in a
storeroom. When not in
use, the other props and sets are stored in a garage.
The new scenes will be filmed in a dedicated room set aside for filming. It
is hoped that this room -
suitable for a set some 6 yards square - will be available for the rest of
this year. There is a chance
that the space available will be increased four-fold in the near future. We
are grateful for the use of
the space, which enables sets to remain erected for longer than a normal filming
weekend.
Direction, Filming and Editing
The story is filmed in HI-8 format and stored on HI-8 and Super-VHS, using
SONY cameras.
Camerawork has mainly been from David and Stephen, though other people have
been involved
along the line! The Direction is usually David on the day of filming, though
only after the three of us
have spend a lot of time in preparation with Storyboards etc. The "Pertwee
Day" was under David's
excellent direction. Some of the footage may be filmed on a Sony Digital camera
- we may
experiment on the next occasion.
However, all editing is done on computer - the footage is grabbed into a digital
environment where
there is no further signal loss before the final tape. Test edits can be done
using lower-quality grabs,
and special effects can be trialed. Editing is done using Adobe Premiere,
and use is increasingly being
made of 3D animation packages for scenes where real filming or models would
b impractical.
The Final Product
As we are a strictly Amateur production we are bound by copyright law not
to make money from
our production. The BBC copyright the Doctor Who concept as well as the Tardis
sets etc. The
Daleks' copyright is held by Terry Nation. We can therefore not sell our video
even in the manner of
the BBV Video releases such as The Stranger series, since we use characters
and ideas from the
BBC series. We are not averse to investigating any way in which people could
have a copy if a
donation were made to charity, though this also seems very unlikely. Rather
the final piece will only
be seen by friends and colleagues of us the makers, on a free basis. Maybe
something will come up
in the future - who knows, though we are not actively seeking anything - we
have made the film's
subject Doctor Who because we like the programme - not because we want to
make money!
We have decided that our next project will NOT contain any copyright material
AT ALL - it will be
a totally original piece of work - one which could be sold if we felt it could
be! Whether it would be
Science Fiction is another matter.
