'The greatest band in the known universe!' probably not, but theyre not bad, and they do kind of bring a cheeky smirk to your face. Gina String and Terence Toweling spoke to our all new droid, the Wordbot xz-5000, while Metalic Man was busy exploring bold new technologies in obscure parts of the galaxy.
Paradox are about to tour, leaving Adelaide at the end of May for Sydney, the Gold Coast and Melbourne.
How do you think this is going to go? So you'll have to get a bigger sock? "Yeah, one that covers the bottom half of me! Im not sure whether im allowed to show my bum or not. I will anyway, but, you know... good publicity if I get arrested." Gina String: "Yes were going away and were taking the silver seduction show with us." What's Seductive about it? Gina: "I dont know, Terence's bottom?" Terence: "Gina's mouth. These underpants." You've sort of been getting vaguely popular lately, have'nt you? Terence Toweling: "It's very strange like that. Coming home and finding heaps of people have rung up who we don't even know wanting us to come and play for them." I remember interviewing you not long after you started, and you were having trouble telling people what you were all about, now people have high expectations from Paradox! Terence: "We've gone sort of full circle, where we were like, without sounding like a wanker, there wasn't anything around like what we were doing, and there still isnt really. There's things that are close, usually people when they think of electronic music they think more techno and house, so that worked against us heaps then, no one wanted to even know about us because of that, and now it seems that everyone wants to know about us becauseof that. So what was a drama for us seems to have turned into a plus. I rekon things like the prodigy have helped us. Even though we're not really like prodigy when you put the music side by side, but its like the closest thing, sort of electronic based, and samples with live vocals, guitar and stuff. Im sure things like that have helped us." Gina: "I rekon. Weve helped ourselves as well though, you know." Yeah, Ive heard that about you guys! Terence: "Yeah, help ourselves to anything we can get our hands on!" Recording? Terence: "Something may happen, something may not happen." Gina: We'll see what comes out of the tour. Theres a lot that may happen, theres a lot that may not happen when we go on tour. We'll see. We may come back and be ... broken up!." Yeah right. How do you think they'll react to Paradox in the Eastern States? Gina: "Probally how they reacted when we first started." Terence: "When we first started here, people just stood there for the full 45 minute set and just stared at us. They didn't speak to their friends or anything, they just looked at us. Then we'd stop, and they'd just look at eachother and just leave. We thought they weren't enjoying it, but then we found out later, people would come up and tell us they were really loving it, they just didn't quite know what to do!" Are you subversive? Do you have a hidden political agenda? Terence: "That's interesting! We don't have a particular political standpoint, as far as now this is what we want to get across. But in our lyrics we do anyway. It's all about sex basically, our band. That's what half our songs are about, f*#king! realistic approaches to relationships, rather than the whole love thing, soft focus and flowers. It's all just about getting down and getting dirty... and being honest about it." words: Wordbot xz-5000
