The woman behind the desk wore a wide-collared, V-necked dress of blue-green, had long hair and low bangs, all of a cross between sunset clouds and the outer edge of a candle flame in an otherwise dark room, and natural I somehow knew, and her eyes behind glasses I didn't think she needed were as blue as Lake Erie at three o'clock on a cloudless summer afternoon; and the colour of her compressed smile matched her hair.
Nine Princes in Amber
Florimel, Flora to those who know her well, knows she doesn't want the throne. She wants to be right next to the throne. Regardless of who ends up on the chair, Flora will be right beside them, whispering in their ear. It's her great strength to be a survivor.
If you doubt Flora's ability, consider her role on Shadow Earth. Eric had left Corwin there to die centuries before. Now he needed someone to keep tabs on his amnesiac brother without letting the rest of the family in on the secret. He chose Flora above Julian, and even above Caine.
During Gérard's Regency, she began spending much more time in Amber, and helping Gérard run things. He generally saw to military affairs, and she to diplomatic. When Yvonne and then Sand turned up, they didn't seem to want to disturb the arrangement.
Flora avoids direct combat. On Shadow Earth, where she has spent a lot of time, she keeps her house filled with an assortment of trained Irish wolfhounds, big enough, and numerous enough, to give an Amberite serious thought before interfering in her ways.
If she comes across as the weak sister, don't buy it. She's as cunning as the rest of them. She's just figured out that it doesn't pay to fight with everyone. One thing all of her siblings want is an ally. So Flora is the perfect ally.
Flora is the first child of Dybele, Oberon's 6th wife. There was a younger sister, Reanna, but she died walking the Pattern many years ago.
