"The Great Bird of the Galaxy"
In September of 1966, humanity received a great gift. From the mind of a man who saw beyond all the prejudice and conflict all around him, came what was originally billed as "Wagon Train To The Stars." His ideals were reflected in what became Star Trek. I remember Thursday nights in front of an old black and white TV set, thrilled to watch such characters as Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock and Dr. McCoy going on missions that always held a message for us all. Back then, it was pure entertainment for a young girl of 12 who spent her time with her nose in a book. As I grew older, I came to realize that Star Trek was potentially a new order...a new way of thinking for Mankind. Gene gave substance to the expression "can't we all just get along?" The longevity of Star Trek gives much more applause to Gene's legacy than I could ever hope to do here. It's devoted fans, who literally saved the Original Series from being cancelled, are very much at the heart of what Star Trek is all about. Therefore, it is more than just appropriate that Gene is now circling above his beloved Earth, among the stars themselves. His death left a void larger than any "black hole". But his ideas and his dream live on. Rest well, Papa Gene...we shall strive to make your vision a reality...for all of us.
