In 1977 I happened to notice a paperback on the shelf titled "The Sword of Shannara", by a new author, Terry Brooks.
I had enjoyed "Lord of the Rings" by J.R.R. Tolkien when I first read it in the 1960's, and had read it at least two times since, as well as other fantasy of the genre. I had found nothing remotely comparable to Tolkien's magic, however. Still, this book had a colorful cover, and the idea of a magic sword sounded promising. I purchased the book, and took it home and started reading.
What I discovered was a source of writing talent so rare and imaginative that in the years since I have waited impatiently for each Terry Brooks novel. He is my favorite living writer, and his Shannara saga is in my view unsurpassed in the history of Fantasy; even by Lord of the Rings.
