City of Gold

A stranger met along the path,

He saved, as he was wont to do,

With grey eyes flashing in their wrath,

The ape-man fought with straining thew.

The two then wandered far and wide,

Searching in the Athnean's quest,

For home, for every wanderer's pride,

Is always where his life's at rest.

They found the valley's golden scene,

But faced a storm and river wild,

And more, he faced a maddened queen,

Who mixed the woman with the child,

When met their eyes the ape-man' stared,

Her beauty cast its haunting spell,

The only time his honor spared,

Perhaps by fortune, could we tell?

The men, they shrank from fair Nemone,

Fearful lest they die a death,

She often dealt to those she'd known,

With parted lips, and perfumed breath.

While far away a lion prowled,

His nostrils sniffed the fragrant air,

A while was heard as Numa growled,

Strange longing shone in his bold stare,

Impatient was this King of Beasts,

As once again he made his way,

Quick was he to finish feasts,

And boldly stalk an unknown prey.
