Floaters

Floaters

Floaters are above the image background.
Floaters can be moved, transformed, masked, copied and otherwise manipulated.
When placed on an image, or used to create a collage, floaters can be manipulated until each is correct, then merged into the background.
Floaters are image elements. They can be stored in Portfolio Libraries and dragged to a canvas as needed.

In this lesson, we will create a floater and store it in a portfolio.

  1. Open a new canvas.
  2. Choose Chalk > Artist Pastel Chalk > Cover > Grainy Soft Cover
  3. Choose a yellow-green pear color
  4. Sketch a pear. Choose other colors and brushes as needed.
  5. Choose the Pencil, 2B Pencil > Buildup > Grainy Soft Buildup, and draw the pear’s stem.
  6. When the pear suits you, Choose the Rectangular marquee (R).
  7. Drag a marquee around the pear.
  8. Open the Floater Portfolio (Press Ctrl-4 to open the Floater Palette, Click Floater > Floater Portfolio.)
  9. Drag the pear to the portfolio.
In this exercise, you created a pear on a white background.
You placed the pear, inside its white rectangle, in the floater portfolio.

To create an object without the white rectangle, try this:

  1. Draw a pear on a white background.
  2. Choose the Wand tool (W)
  3. Click in the white, to select it.
  4. Invert the selection (Select > Inverse) You might want to refine your selection.
  5. Choose Select > Float.
  6. The pear is now a floating object.
  7. If you have white pixels around your pear, paint them.
  8. Then drag the floater to the Floater Portfolio to Save it.

Do the exercises on pages 10-18 in your textbook.
