Captain James T. Kirk ( William Shatner )

Captain Kirk was born in Iowa on Earth in 2233.Hungering for adventure among the stars, he excelled at Starfleet Academy ( he even beat the supposedly unbeatable Kobayashi Maru test scenario) and graduated in 2254. His first post was aboard the U.S.S Farragut, during which time he encountered a deadly dikironium cloud creature on Tycho IV, a creature he was later forced to destroy.

Dedicated officer. Skilled diplomat. Fierce warrior. Warm friend. Captain James Tiberius Kirk is all of these, and more. Easily one of the most famous men in all of Starfleet history, he is also one of Starfleet's most complex personalities. Many times Kirk has risked his life to uphold the duties and ideals of his office. He has challenged authority for the sake of his friends, faced his own worst fears and conquered them, and he even once defeated a "God." And yet this same man has the capacity to create a ridiculous card game like Fizzbin and even treat a tribble with respect.

In 2263 he assumed command of the constitution class starship, U.S.S. Enterprise. It was during this legendary five-year mission that Kirk won renown for his amazing exploits. It was during this mission that forged close friendships with two other legendary Starfleet figures: the half-human-half-Vulcan Mr. Spock and the irascible Dr. Leonard McCoy. Together these three men influenced the course of history throughout the galaxy.

For all of his career success, however, James Kirk never succeeded in forging a lasting romantic relationship. Perhaps his greatest love was given to a woman in earth's far past - Edith Keeler, a social worker in the slums of 1930's America. But in order to restore the damaged flow of history, Kirk had to allow Edith to die in a car accident. This sacrifice, beyond all others, was perhaps Kirk's most heroic deed.

DID YOU KNOW ?

Even James Kirk didn't escape harassment at Starfleet Academy. An upperclassman named finnegan chose Cadet Kirk to be the victim of many cruel practical jokes

Kirk had an older brother named George Samule, whom Kirk always called Sam. Sam died in 2267 during an invasion of deadly neural parasites on the planet deneva.

Kirk's Starfleet serial number is SC-937-0176 CEC

Mr. Spock ( Leonard Nimoy )

Mister Spock is the physical embodiment of the Vulcan IDIC philosophy - "Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations" - for within him beats the heart of a human disciplined by the mind of a Vulcan. Capable of great compassion yet rigorously conditioned from birth to consider any displays of emotion to be "bad taste," Spock's life has been a constant struggle to reconciile two opposing cultures. This internal dilemma might be enough to break some people, but not Spock. He found an environment where his mixed heritage would be an asset, and where his unique potential would grow to its fullest - Starfleet.

Spock was the first Vulcan to enroll in Starfleet Academy, and his father, Sarek, objected to this career choice. Their ensuing argument ignited a feud that kept father and son apart for 18 years. Spock graduated in 2253 and moved up the ranks until he was assigned to the U.S.S. Enterprise, first under the command of Captain Christopher Pike, then James T. Kirk.

The warm friendship that developed between Spock and Kirk has become as legendary as their career exploits. Quite a different brand of friendship developed between Spock and the Enterprise Chief Medical Offcer,Dr. Leonard McCoy - their verbal sparring entertains not only them, but anyone within earshot as well.

Spock is an accomplished player of the Vulcan harp, and is known to playa mean game of 3-dimensional chess, usually with Kirk. He meditates regularly, as per Vulcan tradition, and is a strict vegetarian (althuogh he meat once when he was thrown back to the prehistoric era of the planet Sarpeidon). Despite his human blood, he retains the abilities natural to all Vulcans:the ability to mind meld, utilize the paralyzing nerve pinch, and drop into a healing trance when necessary. He is also susceptible to the Pon farr mating frenzy, a biological trait he'd hoped he would not inherit.

DID YOU KNOW ?

Spock's blood type is T-Negative, rare even for a Vulcan (though it contains human factors). He was 36 years old at the start of the U.S.S. Enterprise's historic five-year mission, and his service number is S179-276 SP.

At the age of 7, Spock was betrothed to a young Vulcan girl named T'Pring. In Vulcan fashion, they were telepathcally bonded so that they would be drawn back together at the proper time. When Spock entered the Pon farr, the Vulcan mating urge, he traveled back to his home planet to take T'Pring as his wife. But by that time she preferred another suitor and the bonding was broken.

Dr. Leonard H. McCoy ( DeForest Kelley )

Doctor Leonard H. McCoy graduated from Starfleet Medical School in 2253 and joined the crew of the Consitiution-class U.S.S. Enterprise in 2266, replacing Doctor Mark Piper. He became a friend and confidant to Captain James T. Kirk, who soon learned to depend on McCoy's country wisdom and no-nonsense honesty.

McCoy's curmudgeonly nature quickly put him at odds with the ship's Vulcan First Officer, Mr. Spock. The two have become verbal sparring partners - McCoy delights in pointing out Spock's emotional slips, and Spock retaliates by poking logic holes in McCoy's often emotion-based opinions. Underneath their bickering, however, each man admires and respects the other.

In 2267, after an accidental overdose of the powerful stimulant cordrazine, McCoy experienced a brief period of insanity during which he leaped through the Guardian of Forever, a time portal ("City on th Edge of forever"). McCoy inadvertently changed history, forceing Kirk and Spock to pass through the Guardian as well - travelling into the past to rescue McCoy and repair the damagehe caused to the established flow of time.

In 2268, after McCoy was diagnosed with terminal xenopolycythemia, a degenerative disease for which there was no known cure. McCoy decided to resign from Starfleet so that he could spend his last days with Natira, the beautiful high priestess of the Yonadan people. After Mr. Spock discovered a cure for the Doctor's affliction within the vast medical record banks of the spaceship Yonada, McCoy and Natira parted - each realizing that they had different paths to follow. McCoy never forgot Natira's love.

DID YOU KNOW ?

Writer Dorothy Fontana wrote a third-season episode entitled "Joanna" which, had it been produced, would have established that McCoy joined Starfleet after a failed marriage. Joanna would have been interduced as his daughter from that marriage.

DeForest Kelley and Leonard Nimoy once worked together before their Star Trek exploits. In an episode of The Virginian, Kelley played a drunken doctor who allowed Nimoy's character to die!

Doctor McCoy's favorite drink is a mint julep.

Nurse Christine Chapel ( Majel Barrett )

The best docter in Starfleet, Leonard McCoy, requires the best nurse, and Christine Chapel ably fills that indispensable role as McCoy's right hand abord The U.S.S. Enterprise. she assists the docter not only in the normal operation of Sickbay, but also whenever McCoy is required to perform emergency medical procedures, or research and test cures for diseases or plagues. she considers herself "a nurse first and a member of the crew of the Enterprise second," and thus puts her medical duties first abouve all else. Her Achilles'heel, however, is her frustrated devotion to and love for Mr.Spock. Even though she knows her affection for him cannot be returned, she never stops hoping that he will someday respond.

The two loves of Christine Chapel's life are both brilliant scientistd and researchers. Chapel signs aboard the Enterprise in hopes of locating her fiance, exobiologist Roger Korby, only to find a dangerous android replica possessing his consciousness. But even before her horrifying that her fiance is gone forever, Chapel begins to develop feeling for Spock. She is drawn to him perhaps because his intellect reminds her of Korby, even though Spock is not able to show her the love that Korby did.

Chapel's closest encounters with Spock have been in ways she never expected. Under the influence of the Psi 2000 virus, she revearls to Spock that she loves him, and that she accepts both his human and Volcan sides. She is humiliated when forced by sadistic Platonians to reveal her feelings and to kiss Spock for their enterianment, but in a much more positive experience, shares consciousness with the Volcan when his essence is hidden in her mind by the disembodied being named Sargon.

Chapel has aided McCoy in some of the worst medical crises in the starship's history. She helped develop cures for the Scalosain water, the Elasian tears affecting Captain Kirk, and the Maddness of Tholian space. She assisted the doctor in a life-saving operation on Spock's father Sarek, and and personally retrained Lt. Uhura's memory is wiped by the space probe Nomad. She even treated the doctor himself when he was afflicted with an aging disease, and later when he was recovering fron xenoplycythemia.

DID YOU KNOW?

Roger Korby was one of Chapel's teachers beore he became her fiance.

Commander Montgomery Scott ( James Doohan )

Montgomery Scott is proverbial mechanical miracle worker who can fix anything - from a burned-out circuit to a failing warp engine - with only a hair clip and a wad of gum. His expertise has saved the original U.S.S. Enterprise from destruction more times then ever Captain James T. Kirk would care to admit.

All Scott ever wanted was to be an engineer, so in 2240 he enrolled in Starfleet Academy as an engineering major. After his graduation in 2244, he served on several ships at engineering posts before his promotion to Chief Engineer abord the Enterprise.where he served first under Captian Christopher Pike, then James Kirk.

Scott displays a single-minded dedication when it comes to the Enterprise. He is proud, even possessive of the starship, so much so that he once started a ber brawl with some Klingons on Space Station K-7 when they called the enterprise a garbage scow. Scott is equally fierce in his loyalty to friends and has risked his life more than once for his comrades.

In 2267, Scotty's engineering genius brought the damaged engines of the wrecked U.S.S. Constellation back to life, allowing Kirk to pilot it into a rogue doomsday machine that was destroying whole planets for fuel. That same year on Argelius II, Scott was suspected of multiple grisly murders when a noncorporeal alien force framed him for the murders it committed. The alien, who had once appeared on Earth as the legendary Jack the Ripper, was exposed and dispelled, freeing Scott of all blame. later, near the Malurian System, the Enterprise picked up a sentient space probe called nomad, which killed Scott and then miraculously brought him back to life. Scott retained no memory of the event

Although it may seem that Scotty is married to his work, he is actually a passionate man who simply has yet to find a woman who truly understands him. He once thought he found such a woman in lieutenant Mira Romaine, who was traveling aboard the Enterprise on assignment to Memory Alpha in 2268. When Mira was possessed by the life energies of the last inhabitants of the dead planet Zetar, Scott's love and encouragement helped her retain her own identity as the Zetarians fought to control her body. She was finally freed of the entities, though duty compelled her to leave Scott to complete her mission on Memory Alpha. Scott also once fell for lovely Lieutenant Carolyn Palamas, the Enterprise's archaeology and anthropology officer, but Carolyn fell in love with Apollo, a god-like aalien that Kirk was forced to destroy.

DID YOU KNOW ?

Scotty reads technical journals for relaxation, and on ceremonial occasions when the rest of the Enterprise officers wear dress uniforms, Mr. Scott often wears a traditional Scottish kilt.

Although Mr. Scott never played the bagpipes on the original series, it is presumed that he owned a set of pipes and knew how to play.

Scotty's Starfleet serial number is SE 19754.T.

Lieutenant Commander Gary Mitchell ( Gary Lockwood )

Lieutenant Commander Gary Mitchell is many things: a ladies man, a fine officer and a good friend to James T. Kirk. But after being affected by an unknown force at the edge of the galaxy, Gary Mitchell mutates into a being with exceptional telekinetic ablilties: he gains the power to move objects, control his body's autonomic functions, manipulate ships controls and even kill with his mind. Mitchell's abilities develop to incredible levels, driving him mad with power - seeing himself as a god, and looking on the U.S.S. Enterprise and it's crew is insignificant playthings that he can manipulate for his own amusement. Mitchell's insanity forces Captain Kirk into a terrible choice: the life of his friend, or the safety of his ship and crew.

Gary Mitchell was born with an aptitude for ESP (Extra-Sensory Perception), which manifested itself in his early childhood as an interest in elementary magician's tricks and a talent for "guessing games." He inherited his mental gifts from his mother, whose family showed increased ESP for at least six prior generations. Mitchell recorded well above average scores in standard ESP tests. On Deneb IV, Mitchell displayed a marked ability in sensing the telepathic communication used by the inhabitants, and carried on long telepathic "conversations" on at least three occasions - with 80% or better comprehension

Mitchell attended Starfleet Academy, where he first met a young instructor named James T. Kirk. the two became friends, and at one point he secretly set Kirk up with a "little blond lab tech" whom Kirk almost married. Years later, Captain Kirk would ask Mitchell to serve with him on his first command. On the planet Dimorus, Mitchell jumped in the path of a poisoned dart thrown by an indigenous rodent-like creature, saving Kirk's life.

Mitchell was serving on board the U.S.S. Enterprise as helmsman when his natural psychic ability was mutated into super-human powers. Sadly, Captain Kirk was forced to kill his old friend when it became clear that Mitchell would destroy the ship and its crew. Kirk listed Mitchell as having died in the line of duty.

DID YOU KNOW ?

The famous works of the poet Tarbolde were actually found to have been inspired by an entity known as "Onaya," who fed off of the neural energy created by Tarbolde as he worked. The same entity later inspiredDeep Space Nine's Jake Sisko to write the first draft of his novel, Anselem, nearly costing him his life.

At Starfleet Academy, Gary Mitchell described (Lieutenant) James T. Kirk as a "stack of books with legs" - a tough instructor, in whose class you would either "think or sink."

...
Uhura ( Nichelle Nichols )
Rank: Lieutenant
Duty: Communications officer
Race: Human

Whenever Uhura goes on landing parties, she proves herself an adaptable and capable officer. When she is accidentally transported to a parallel universe, along with Kirk, Docter McCoy, and Chief Engineer Scott, she has to take on the persona of her vicious alternate self. Kidnapped to triskelion, she is forced to fight like a gladiator, and fend off the unwanted advances of the thrall named Lars. When the ship is hijacked by androids sent by Harry Mudd, she helps defeat them despite the temptation of eternal life and ageless beauty in an android from.

For a starship charting the unexplored reaches of the galaxy, contacting numerous alien races for the first time and often cut off from its command base, a highly skilledchief communications officer is critical. On the U.S.S. Enterprise, Lieutenant Uhura fills that position extraordinarily well. Uhura's most-often-seen duty of opening hailing frequencies to planets or other ships represents only a minute fraction of her responsibilities and capabilities. She acts as Captain Kirk's ears and voice both inside and outside the ship - communicating with crew all over the Enterprise, monitoring landing party missions, contacting other vessels both friendly and hostile, and signaling Starfleet Command when necessary. To successfully return from his five-year mission, Kirk surrounds himself with the finest officers in Starfleet, and Uhura distiguishes herself among them.

Her most tramatic experience is having her memory wiped out by the computer/space probe Nomad when it interprets her singing as a biological malfunction. Docter McCoy uses advanced medical techniques to retrain her and restore her to normal. Uhurs is a close friend of Lt. Sulu and Ensign Chekov, and is extremely to Kirk and Spock.

DID YOU KNOW?

Uhura's love of music is so great that when the powerful alien Trelane granted her the sudden ability to play the harpsichord, Uhura enjoyed her new talent , despite the fact that she and her fellow officers were Trelane's prisoners. She has a lovely singing voice - one of her favorite songs is "Beyond Antares."

In 2267 Uhura Started tribble trouble on the Enterprise by bringing the very first one aboard. She'd purchased the fuzzball on space station K-7, unaware of the creature's dangerous potential.

Uhura's name comes from the Swahili wod "Uhuru" witch means "freedom".

Hikaru Sulu ( George Takei )
Rank: Lieutenant
Duty: Helmsman
Race: Human

A command officer is that rare combination of book knowledge coupled with field experience, great compassion counteredfierce control. Even early in his Starfleet career, Hikaru Sulu displayed these traits.

Sulu was born in 2237 in the city of San Francisco, planet Earth. He entered Starfleet Academy in 2255 and, after graduation, spent seven years at various Starfleet posts before earning the position of staff physicist aboard the famed U.S.S. Enterprise, newly under the command of Captain James T. Kirk. In less than a year, Kirk transferred Suku to bridge duty, assigning him the crucial post of helmsman.

A seasoned officer whose knowledge, instincts and firm control impressed Kirk early on, Sulu often remained onbored in command of the Enterprise when the Captain and Spock were off ship. Left with such a responsibility in often harrowing circumstances, Sulu again and again proved his ability to command.

In 2266 Sulu contracted the Psi 2000 Virus, which erased all self-control. A whole new side of sulu's personality emerged - the valiant hero, eager to smash all enemies in the name of justice. Although this drastic change caused havoc abored ship, it revealed to Sulu's peers his wildly adventurous spirit, not to mention his powess with a sword.

Later that year, Sulu was one of the first "guests" of Trelane, the Squire of Gothos, who was actually a near-omnipotent child-being playing with his new pets. Showing remarkable restaint in the face of the infuriating Trelane, Sulu and the landing party finally escaped. In 2267 Sulu was infected by the spores of Omicron Ceti III and, along with the rest of the infected Enterprise crew, Calmly and quite pleasantly abandoned his post until Kirk found a cure for the Spore's influence.

Later that year, a landing party consisting of Kirk, McCoy, Scott and Uhura were thrown into a parallel universe. There they encountered hostile counterparts of their fellow crew members, among rhem Sulu, a ruthless security chief with a lusty eye on Uhura and a dagerous ambition to clame the captain's chair. Like the Psi 2000 virus, this mirror sulu revealed anoter side, this time a dark side, of the Enterprise helmsman. Fortunately, the "real" Sulu has always countered his ambitions with discipline and loyalty to ship and crew.

DID YOU KNOW?

Sulu's many hobbies include fencing, botany, and old-style handguns. He always dreamed of obtaining a Police Special pistol for his collection.

In the late 23rd Century, Sulu caotained the U.S.S. Excelsior, registry number NX-2000. A young Vulcan sering serving under him as junior science officer, Ensign Tuvok, would later serve under Captain Kathryn Janeway of the U.S.S. Voyager.

Pavel Andreievich Chekov ( Walter Koenig )
Rank: Ensign
Duty: Navigator, U.S.S. Enterprise
Race: Human

One of the greatest aspects of Star Trek is it's vision - not only of world peace, but of galactic cooperation. This futuristic dream is reflected in every aspect of the series, but no more so then in the composition of the Bridge crew of the original U.S.S. Enterprise - men and women on equal terms, Asian, Scottish, Russian, American, African, even Vulcan - all friends, all working together. The various age ranges of these characters provide many experience and knowledge levels, but only one of them encompasses knowledge and expertise along with impetuous youth and a charming naivete: Ensign Pavel Andreievich Chekov.

In 2245 the year the Enterprise was launched, Pavel A Chekov was born on earth in Russia. he entered Starfleet Academy in 2263, graduated in 2267, and that same year was assigned as Enterprise navigator. Since he was brand new to deep space exploration, Captain James T. Kirk and First Officer Spock kept an eye on the young man, making sure that he was given plenty of opportunities to experience and learn.

Chekov proved himself effcient from the start. Not long after joining the crew he was assigned to Spock's sensor station when Kirk, Spock, Engineer Scott and Helmsman Sulu disappeared on the planet Pyris VII. Lieutenant DeSalle, left in command, ordered Chekov to get help to recalibrate the sensors, but Chekov replied, "I can do it, sir. I'm not that green." And he proved it - though later on Gamma Hydra IV he panicked at the sight of a dead, something a seasoned officer would not do. In this instance, however, Chekov's panic was the key factor that led Dr. McCoy to find the antidote to a deadly aging disease.

In 2268, while on a survey mission to the planet triskelion, Chekov, Kirk and communications Officer Uhura were captured by the Providers, powerful beings who forced the officers into gladiator-like combat for entertainment until Kirk convinced them to free their prisoners. That same year Chekov was "killed" in a surrealistic Western adventure created by the Mmelkotians, who used illusion as a punishment for the Enterprise's incursion into their space. When the Enterprise was trapped in unstable Tholian space, Chekov was thr first to succumb to madness, though he later recovered when McCoy found an antidote.

While attending Starfleet Academy, Chekov had fallen in love with Cadet Irina Galliulin. Too much of a free spirit, Irina later quit the Academy, leaving Chekov heartbroken. The two lovers met again in 2269 when techno-rebel Dr. Senrin hijacked the Enterprise to search for the mythical planet Eden. Irina was one of his followers, though Sevrin's Eden turned out to be a planet of poison.

DID YOU KNOW?

In 2267 Chekov learned that a violnt mirror universe existed, one in which his counterpart attempted to murder Captain Kirk so he could get a promotion. It is unknown whether Kirk ever told Chekov that his counterpart ended up in the "agony booth" for his crime.

Although he was born an only child, Chekov once believed he had a brother named Piotr, a fact planted in his mind by a malevolent entity on Beta XII-A.

Janice Rand ( Grace Lee Whitney)
Rank: Yeoman
Duty: Captains Aide
Race: Human

When Captain James T. Kirk assumed command of the U.S.S. Enterprise and began his firt historic five-year mission, he took with him the best crew that Starfleet had to offer. Among that crew was Yeoman Janice Rand, a young officer whose duty it was to efficiently organize Kirk's life so that he could concentrate on efficiently commanding his ship. Rand immediately caught the captain's eye, and she found him equally compelling. Though Captain Kirk and Yeoman Rand were attracted to each other, the two professionals kept a reluctant distance, knowing that a relationship would jeopardize their duties.

Although Rand served less than a year aboard the Entrprise, she played a pivotal role in several important missions. When the cargo ship Antares transferred young crash survivor Charlie Evans aboard, Rand had the dubious honor of being the first female he'd ever seen. Charlie fell instantly in love with her and badgered her for attention until she had to directly reject him, unaware that the boy had been given special powers by the mysterious Thasians in order to survive. Charlie angily made her "go away", but the Thasians restored her. Where she had gone during her absence remains unknown.
