The Techniques and First Steps
To Divine with the Onticle you will follow three steps: Drawing the numbers for the spread. Deciding which subjects the card will indicate. Finding the appropriate suit for the subject. Looking up the suit of the card for the number we are looking at. (If you made cards, you will see this by examining the cards). After which, you look up the suit and find the subject listed under it in the first column. Going across, you look up the number ie: all fives in each suit will indicate a word which is a specific meaning.
Lets begin the first step. We need to get numbers from one to seventy two from which to consult the pages of the book and the cards.
So far, this page doesn't have the Java programming needed to automatically generate numbers for a reading. This being the case, you must come up with a ritual to generate the five to ten numbers ranging from one to seventy-two. Following are some techniques that may be helpful.
The Card Method
For this, you need to make 72 cards and draw the images as I have described in the link below, then you can draw the number of cards you need to perform the reading. Suggested are ten cards.
The Compass Technique
To use this, you need a flat area outside, a compass and some rock markers. You will pick a center point and mark it with a stake. Then you will walk out the radius of the circle and begin walking the perimeter dropping a rock arbitrarily. All ten rocks will be dropped along the way. You can use music as a rhythm to drop the rocks by. After this is done, you can then go back to the center and read the azimuth for each rock. You may need a tall stake to mark each rock at eye level or you can get low and read from the ground. This being best if the area is very flat and clear of tall grasses. When you have recorded the azimuth (rounded to the nearest five degrees), you will divide the resulting numbers by 5. This will result in ten numbers from one to seventy-two.
The Calculator Technique
To use this, you need a calculator with a random number function. This is by far the least exciting ritual but helpful for a quick reading. Simply hit the random number key and multiply the number ie: 0.635 by 72 and the result will be a random number from one to seventy two. Repeat this ten times.
The ten numbers you generated are five pairs. Depending on the question asked by the querent, you can decide what the first number in each pair will mean by picking a subject from the list of subjects and then ignoring the second number unless clarification is needed. If the question posed is not specific, you can have the second card of the pair determine the subject for you using the basic seventy-two subjects. Another option is to only use the first card in each pair and use my list. Ie: The Person Involved, The Month, The Place, The Event, An Object or Sign. You are not limited to ten numbers alone if you need more but the numbers five and ten are a traditional element of reading the Onticle.
