Avenue Outside the Temple -- Edfu Temple

Between the inner temple and the outer walls of the temple, an avenue runs the length of both, its walls carved with depictions of the Osiris myth.

The story goes that Osiris' brother, Set, killed Osiris and eventually scattered his pieces all over Egypt. Osiris' wife, Isis, put the parts together and then bore him a son -- Horus -- who eventually grew to manhood and, for want of a better term, kicked Set's ass.

The longer version of the story is here, in this avenue. Bring a translator and a couple day's worth of clothes!

You'll note that the carving's face has been defaced. You can thank Egyptian Monks for that: they used to hole up in ancient temples like this, and often defaced the "idols" that they found.
