Giza Pyramids -- The Great Pyramid

And here it is: the Great Pyramid of Khufu, otherwise known as Cheops. Standing at about 136.5 meters high and 210.5 meters to a side, the mere sight of it defies the ability of your camera to take a reasonably close picture and yet get it all in the lens. And yet, we try...

The Pyramids really do sneak up on you. In order to get there you take the highway a ways out of Cairo, out into the sort of places where people have goats and cows outside of their apartments and farmers fields are everywhere. And then, past the buildings, you'll just see Khufu's Pyramid looming where it really wasn't a second before.

The Great Pyramid's top is fairly flat, and once, long ago, it used to be quite the thing to have your servants help you on up and take a picnic lunch with you. I'm also told that young boys used to race up to the top and back down again to get money from tourists. They won't let you do either, anymore, but it's not as though I was tempted to go climbing, anyway.

As previously mentioned, we didn't get nearly enough time to spend on this great treasure, which was sort of disappointing.
