The Use of Hit points

In Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, the hit points of a player character are not intended to represent the structural and anatomical integrity of a human being. Instead, they primarily represent the luck and skill of an individual who is skilled in combat. However, as the hit point rules exist now, they do not reflect this very well. This article is an attempt to change this.

Because hit points represent luck and skill as well as damage capacity, these house rules allow players to expend the hit points of their character to alter dice rolls. This represents the character's greater than normal efforts to accomplish a task; the damage represents muscle strain, aggrivating already existing wounds, and less concentration on defense (leaving the character open to attack). To determine hit point loss, check the chart below:

Desired Effect Hit Points Lost
Extra +1 on hit roll (before rolling to hit) 1
Extra +1 on hit roll (after rolling to hit) 2
Extra +1 on damage roll (before rolling damage) 2
Extra +1 on damage roll (after rolling damage) 3
Striking a creature which requires a magical weapon to be hit 5 per plus required, per blow
Extra +1 on saving throw roll (before rolling) 2
Extra +1 on saving throw (after rolling) 4
