Chapter 6: An Unexpected Ally

Torn Apart

Panic and chaos broke out in the city of Nisan as news of Kritine's invation plan reached the citizens.  Rioting broke out on the streets as people were knocked over by other people as they fled the city.  Others were too stubborn to leave, declaring they lived there all of their lives and would die there, not realizing they had a chance to live and see Nisan again.  "Well," Citan said, "it looks like most of the citizens have cleared out.  There should be minimum civilian casualties now."  "That's good to hear," Bart replied, "but what are we gonna do when Kriltine's army gets here?"  "I hate to be the negative one around here," Rico declared, "but without Fei, we don't stand a chance."  "Can't we just use our gears to blow him away?" Maria asked.  "He's far stronger than our Omnigears," Billy answered, "Even when he's a human, he could take our gears down in a heartbeat unless...".  Billy paused for a moment.  He remembered how his father took down all of those soldiers.  Yes, he thought to himself, we may have a chance, at least against Kriltine's army.  "Unless what?" Citan asked. "Well, we can't defeat his army unless our gears are at level infinte mode," Billy explained, "but Kriltine could still take us down, even in Hyper mode. That's how he took down father."  Bart turned from the window and approached the rest of the crew.  "Well, at least we know we can take down Kriltine's reinforcements," Bart responded, "but you guys are forgeting something." "What's that?" Rico asked.  "We can only maintain level Infinite mode for a short period of time," he explained, "it may not be enough to take down fifty Omnigears."  Of course, the team had forgoten that factor, since they haven't fought with their gears for fifteen years.  Level Infinite could only be maintained a short while.  The crew looked desparatly at each other, wondering if this was the end of the road for them.

In an upstairs room, Elly sat next to Fei's bed, holding his hand with both of hers.  She had been doing that ever since the team arrived in Nisan.  Elly was worn out and tired.  But she couldn't fall asleep now.  She had to force herself awake and watch over the man she dearly loved, for he could wake up at any moment.  As Elly contiuned to look down and hope, Margie came into the room. "How's he doing?" she asked.  Elly looked up from the floor.  "Still no change," she responded.  She slowly stood up and began to walk toward the small, stained glass window.  She then turned back to Margie.  "What if he never recovers," she said, "What if he dies from trauma?"  Elly broke down in tears.  Margie walked over and hugged her.  "Listen," she replied, "Fei has been in a lot worse situations then this.  He'll pull through, I know he will."  Elly knew Margie was trying to comfort her, but it wasn't working too well.  "I wish I could fully believe that," Elly said, "but seeing Fei like this just makes me think of the worst.  It's just the way I am."  "I understand," Margie said, "but just try to believe he'll be okay."  Elly lifted her head from Margie's shoulder and sat next to Fei.  "I would like to be alone now," she quitely said.  "I'll check on him in an hour," Margie replied as she walked back down stairs.

Inside Fei's subconscious, Id and Fei began to slowly separate.  Blue and green rays surronded both of the warriors as they began fading out of Fei's subconscious and into the depths of reality.  "Almost done," Id replied, "It should be another five or so minutes and then we'll be fully separate."  "Hey Id, do you think we'll have a chance against Kriltine, despite the separation?" "From what is known about him, we may have a slim chance." Id replied, "the bastard has been known to be the destroyer of countries for the last 500 years." "500?" Fei shouted in surprisement, "Damn, that's a long time!"  "I know," Id remarked, "He was one of Krelian's generals in his army 500 years ago.  He was thought to have been killed in a battle somewhere near where present-day Bledavik stands.  That was one reason why Krelian turned mad.  You see, Fei, his whole family line has the power to live 1000 years if they wanted to.  "How?" Fei asked.  "Over 4000 years ago, when gears first were built and use for combat, one of Kriltine's ancestors developed a formula that was supossed to make a person live for eternity.  But, since he was too greedy and careless to check the side effects, he took it.  After an hour or so, when the drug was fully into his bloodstream, he noticed a dramatic increase in his power.  The drug also gave him the ability to transform into an even more powerful being, with energy levels surpassing 500,000.  He took advantage of his new power and used it for evil instead of good.  He destroyed the city he lived in, killing everyone and everything in it.  He went to other cities and destroyed them as well.  One day, he powered up so much, he overloaded himself, and nearly destroyed the planet.  The military decided to try out their newly built gears to lauch this maniac into space.  Since Kriltine's ancestor was in his tranformed stage at the time, he was a giant, so one gear couldn't do the job. It took over 300 gears to lift him up.  Anyway, they desparatly got him off the planet and he exploded in space.  The shock wave knocked out half of the cities on the planet.  But, it wasn't over yet.  This ancestor of his had already gotten a women pregnant, and secretly injected the drug into the womb.  Then it went many generations, and then finally to Kriltine.  That's why he's so unbelievbly strong and can live such a long time."  "That would also explain why Krelian lived for so long," Fei said.  "Yes, his mother was the one with that power," Id added.  Fei looked down at the deep blue void of emptinees below him. "We must hurry," he finally said.

"10 minutes until we reach Nisan, master!" Armanbad shouted.  "Excellent," Kriltine said, "Armanbad, take the troops in and torture every disobideint person there.  Make sure they get the worst torture possible and then leave them for dead.  The rest of the troops are on their way and should arrive in moments."  "Yes sir!" Armanbad shouted as he saluted his master.  "Oh and one more thing, Armanbad," Kriltine replied.  "What's that?" Armanbad asked.  "I want Fei and Elly brought back to me, alive AND unharmed.  If they are harmed, I will personally hold you responsible and I know you don't want that."  "I will not fail you, master!" Armanbad shouted, "Now, men, let's torture!"  The army of men shouted inside their huge, metallic Omnigears as they sped off toward Nisan. Kriltine stayed behind and decided to watch the show from a distance.  "I will spill your blood all over my sword, Fei, I swear it!" Kriltine shouted.  A cold, evil smile came over his face as he watched his army head for Nisan.

Sirens began roaring all over Nisan as Armanbad and the fifty Omnigears approached the city.  "Okay, men!" he shouted, "Surround the city so no one can escape!"  The huge, powerful Omnigears did just that.  They surrounded the city and loaded up their guns and special rocket launchers.  They aimed them at the stone walls of the city while Armanbad aimed four rocket launchers at some nearby buildings in his second class Omnigear, Vigire.  On the east side of the city, where the entrance to the city was just a measly tunnel, several troops entered and hid.  Other troops planted booby traps on the bridge that led outside the city.  They layed proximety mines that blended in with the color of the bridge and trip wires so the civilains would trip into a mine and be killed.

The crew watched from the walls of the cathedral as the Omnigears surrounded the city walls and planted their booby traps.  As every second passed, it was becoming clear that the Xenogears crew didn't have a chance.  Luckily, the Yggdrasil took off before the army arrived, but the bad thing is, there was no escape.  The crew was trapped in Nisan and was also cut off from outside help. "So, what do we do now?  Do we run out and fight or do we sit here and wait to be tortured, the be left for dead?" Billy asked.  "We don't have a choice," Bart declared, "We must go out and fight.  I know there's a good chance we won't make it, but at least we'll give this city a fighting chance."  "The young one is right," Citan added, "We must defend this city, with or without Fei."  "We're gonna die either way so I say lets just die now and save Kriltine the problem of having us tortured by making his army kill us instantly," Rico replied.  Bart walked back from the window and joined the rest of his team mates.  "Then it's settled," he responded, "We go out and fight.  I'll go upstairs and tell Elly." "No!  Don't!"  Margie came running down the stairs.  "You can't make her fight!" "Why not?" Rico asked, "We need all the help we can get!"  "She doesn't want to fight!  She wants to be by Fei's side.  She knows as well as us this is the end for us.  At least let her have the privilage to be with Fei, her husband, her only love, until the end, like it was meant to be."  Rico was ready to argue but decided not to.  He knew he would lose this argument because Citan, Bart and Billy agreed with Margie.  "Alright then," Rico finally spoke, "Let's give them all we can give!"  Billy, Citan, Bart, Rico, Chu-Chu, and Maria all went outside.  The walked out in the open and saw the huge gears outside the walls, ready to blow them to pieces and to slaughter every human in the city.  "Okay people," Citan declared, "call your gears back!"  The whole crew took out their special remote controls and pushed the call gear button.  "Sigurd!" Bart shouted, "Open the bay doors!"  "All ready done, young master," Sigurd replied from the bridge of the Yggdrasil, "Your gears are powering up and are ready for launch.  They should arrive in minutes."  "Well done," Bart commented, "You be careful now."  "As to you sir," Sigurd said as he hung up the phone.  Bart turned back to the crew.  "Our gears should arrive in moments," he announced. "Hopefully, we'll still be standing when they arrive," Maria replied.

"Id, we need to hurry!  The army has arrived and is preparing to fire on the city walls!" Fei shouted desparatly.  "Just a few more seconds," Id replied, "then we can go out and help your friends fight those bastards."  The commotion of the army and her anxiouty had destracted Elly enough for her not to notice that two figures began to appear on the bed.  All she could think about was her friends and if Fei will ever recover from his severe trauma he seemed to be suffering from.  "You know Id, Elly and the others aren't going to like this very much," Fei said.  "They'll have to live with it," Id responded, "they should be just concentrating on the fight and not whether my trust is worhty to you people or not."  I hope you live up to your word, Fei thought, I hope you do.  "Seperation, complete!" Id shouted.  Elly jumped at the noise and turned around to see what it was.  She looked at the two figures in the bed and screamed.  "Elly!!  Calm down!" Fei shouted as he ran up and caught Elly in his arms.  "What's he doing here?" she demanded, "Why are you here?  We don't have time to deal with you right now!"  "It's okay, Elly," Fei said, "I know this will sound strange, but he's here to help us."  "Are you out of your damn mind?" she shouted, "what on Earth made you even think of trusting him?"  "If you are smart, you'll stop questioning me so Fei and I can get to the battlefield. There's no time left!  If you want, you can hide in here like the rest of the cowards and wait for your termination!"  "Why you little...." Elly was interupted by Fei as he restrained her from attacking Id.  "That's enough, both of you!" he shouted, "Id's right, we have no time to waste.  Please trust me on this one, Elly.  I already said if he tried to backstab us, I would take care of him personally."  Elly's face was still red with anger and her mind full of confusion and hatred for Id, but she seemed to calm down a little after Fei said this.  "Okay then," she finally responded, "let's join the others outside.  As she said this, they heard the loud noise of an explosion.  The three looked out the window and saw huge clouds of smoke coming up from behind the other buildings.  The army had just launched the first of many deadly and fearful attacks on the city of Nisan.
