Breeding Chocobos
Breeding chocobos requires a lot of time and money but I
think it is well worth it. This is the only way that you can get certain
materia like mime and the ultimate summon, Knights of the Round. It is
also nice to have a gold chocobo with which you can easily win S-class
races at gold saucer which will also get you some nice prizes. You will
also be able to access the ancient forest long before even being able to
fight Diamond Weapon but before you can start breeding, you must be at
a certain point in the game. Once you attain the highwind, you can start
getting chocobos but remember it's gonna cost you a lot of money. I suggest
having at least about 10000 gils just to get started. The next thing you
get is chocobos. To get river and mountain chocobos which are necessary
in the process of getting a gold chocobo, you must breed specific kinds
of chocobos. You will need a great chocobo of both genders and a good chocobo
of both genders. A good place to find great chocobos is on the Mideel continent
and a good place for good chocobos is southeast of Gold Saucer. Remember
great chocobos are the ones that are jogging in the stable and the good
ones are walking in the stable. Make sure you buy all the stables you need
before you begin collecting the chocobos. You must have at least 5 stalls
using the method I shall describe but I'd just go ahead and buy all 6.
If you think this is too much money to spend, you're in the wrong business.
When you've got the stalls, go to one of the areas and start catching chocobos.
The stables can hold no more than four at a time so catch four and return
to the farm. Talk to Choco Billy about moving chocobos and you'll get to
select which ones to put into stalls if any at all. If you see the kind
you need, put it in a stall. I have read that it is possible to tell the
gender of the chocobo before placing it in the stall but I could never
figure out what they meant. I just put it in the stall and if it wasn't
the gender I needed, I released it. Get all four chocobos you need and
start feeding. The greens at the farm suck, you'll want to go to the chocobo
sage and buy the good stuff. You'll see why I said the chocobo business
is expensive. The chocobo sage lives close to the center of the northern
continent. His house is surrounded by a patch of green grass which you
can land the highwind on. You'll want to buy the silkis greens which are
5000 gil each and maybe a few reagen greens which are 3000 gil each. I
don't completely max out each of the first four chocobo's characteristics
so I feed them about 10 silkis greens each but if you want to max them
out, it will probably be 15 to 20 greens. Once you have the greens, it's
time to feed. This of course can only be done at the farm. I never feed
them more than two at a time, this makes feeding them take a long time
but I believe it gives them more ability. Once you've got their abilities
up, it's time to race. This, as you probably know, is done in Gold Saucer.
Talk to the girl that was your coach when you raced during the Corel Prison
incident. Race each of the chocobos until they're on S-class. If you can't
get them that high, their abilities probably aren't high enough and they
need more food. After their stats are up, it's time to breed. But first
you'll need the proper nut. It is called a carob nut and can be stolen
from a dragon near the chocobo sages house. You can also buy it from the
chocobo sage but it is expensive and why buy it when you can get it for
free. The dragon has a lot of hp but doesn't attack very strong. Once you
have the nut, head back to the chocobo farm. Be sure to save your game
outside. Breed a great one with a good one using the carob nut. You're
trying to get a green or blue chocobo. If you get a yellow one, reset it.
I suggest getting the green one first since it is harder to come by. Whenever
you get what you want, go outside, save it, and try for the other color.
Do remember that the other one must be of different gender so if you have
a green female, you must get a blue male. The blue chocobo can cross shallow
water and the green chocobo can cross mountains. With the blue chocobo,
you have access to a materia cave near the southeast continent. I'll let
you find it but I'll tell you that it's east of Mideel. With the green
chocobo, you can get to a cave on the Wutai continent. It may take a few
minutes to find, you can fly around in the Highwind until you find it and
then land and ride the chocobo to it. After you get all the materia from
the caves, start feeding and racing the blue and green chocobo. When they're
S-class, breed them with another carob nut. I would save first but I believe
there's a 100% chance of getting a black chocobo. A black chocobo can cross
shallow water and mountains. There is a materia cave north of Nibelheim
accessible with the black chocobo. Next, get the black chocobo's levels
up. You're gonna need a zeio nut which can be stolen from little goblins
on an island in the northeast. You also have to have a wonderful chocobo
with it's levels up. You can find a wonderful chocobo in the tracks on
the northern continent. After breeding the black chocobo and the wonderful
chocobo, you should have a gold chocobo. Now you can go to the materia
cave in the northeast and get Knights of the Round. You're God now.
