Even though he hadn't traveled the road for four years, he didn't need a map to guide him. He knew the way. The way back to her. He would always remember the way. He tuned the radio on the 76' black Chevelle to her favorite station. A song came on that he knew and he started to sing along with it.

"Moon is off my shoulder, sun is in my eyes. Almost to your hometown, it's just another mile. Memories surround me of a, old familiar time. Life was simple then, when your love was mine. There's a cool wind, on the desert tonight." He looked up and imagined that he saw Buffy. "I can almost see your golden hair, flyin in the moonlight. Ooohhh it was a restless kinda free, when it was, you and forever and me."

He reached the Sunnydale town limits just as the song went into it's second verse. "I pulled off the highway, on your side of town. Make the turn past the railroad tracks as the sun goes down." He stopped near her house and turned the car off except for the radio. "I remember how you would wait, by the front porch light. You were always ready, to take a, midnight ride." He could see her bedroom light was on. Good. She was home. He pulled a single white rose out of the glove compartment. He started the car up and it roared to life as it took off with a screech. As he passed her house, he threw the rose up to her window. It landed safely on the roof as he sped off. "There's a cool wind, on the desert tonight. I can almost see your golden hair, flyin in the moonlight. Ooohh, it was a restless kinda free. When it was, you and forever and me. Sometimes love gets lost and it's, never found. But I just had to see, if your still around. There's a cool wind, on the desert tonight."

Buffy had heard the car start and screech down the street. She reached her window as the car passed her house. She caught a brief glimpse of the driver and she thought she recognized him. She looked down and saw a single white rose laying on her roof. She opened the window and gently picked up the rose.

There was a piece of paper tied to it. Carefully she untied and opened it. It was a charcoal drawing of her. And someone else. A man. Angel. It was a drawing of them at the mansion, sitting by the fireplace. They were snuggled close together and he had his arms wrapped protectivly around her. Her head was laying on his shoulder and he in turn had his head resting on hers. They were staring into the fire that was roaring in the fireplace. There was a brief note underneath the drawing. "What was and will never be again. You and forever and me. Goodbye."

Keeping the rose in her hand, she ran down the stairs. "Mom I'm going out!" She called before she ran out the door and to her car. The 67' forrestt green Corvette convertable that Giles, her mom, and dad had bought her as a graduation gift was quietly waiting for her in the garage.

As she drove down the road, she realized that she had no idea where he would be. Then she remembered a place that he had always wanted to take her. It was a pier about 15 miles away from Sunnydale that he always talked about. If he still cared for her, he might go there. She picked up speed and the Corvette sped off into the night.

When she got there, she could hear a radio and a bass voice singing along with it. "I can almost see your golden hair, flyin in the moonlight. Ooohhh it was a restless kinda free, When it was, you and forever and me. When it was, you and forever and me."

The song ended, the radio turned off, and there was silence. There was a full moon out, lighting the pier and beach in a pale blue light. Buffy looked around, looking for Angel or for some sign of him. But she could see none.

She slowly walked down to the beach, not watching anything except her own feet. At the edge of the water, she looked at her hand. She still wore the ring he had givern her. Her hand still clutched the rose she had found on her roof. She feel to the ground sobbing. Not caring about the sand that caring about the sand that coated her arms, face, and legs. All she could think of was that Angel, her Angel, her guardian Angel, had left her.

Unknown to her, Angel had been just around the bend in the beach, sitting in the darkness under the pier. He had been sitting there silently, looking at the moon when he heard someone start to cry. It was a woman. Of that he was sure. He walked around the bend in the beach to try to find the source of the crying and he froze. Though her face was buried in the sand, there was no mistaking the blonde hair or the tiny body. It was Buffy. His face echoed her pain. He hated to see her cry. He wanted to go to her and hold her in his arms, to tell her everything would be all right and that he would never leave her.

He was about to turn away when he heard her speak. "Why? Oh God why did you leave me Angel?" Her voice cracked. "I need you so much." he turned and saw that she wasn't speaking to him directly. She didn't even know he was there. Her face was still buried in the sand. His resolve broke at her words.

Quietly, he walked over to her, knelt down beside her, and gingerly took her into his arms. She resisted him at first, then recognized his touch, and let him pull her to his chest. She clutched to his collar, sobbing uncontrolably. Soon the front of his shirt was soaked with her tears. But he didn't care.

All he cared about was that he was holding Buffy in his arms again after four years.

Soon her sobbing stopped. But Buffy continued to clutch to him. She spoke but she didn't look up at him. "You came back." He kissed the top of her head.

"How could I stay away?" She looked up at him. "Why didn't you come back sooner?" He looked down into her eyes. "At first my pride kept me away. I didn't think you wanted to see me again after I had left you without even saying goodbye. I was so jealous thinking that you had moved on and found someone else."

He looked away from her. Gently, she took his face in her hands and turned his face back to her. When their eyes met, she spoke softly. "How could I move on? Every single night for the past four years all I have ever dreamed about was you. You stayed in my mind even during the day. There was no escaping thoughts of you. I wanted to come after you but I was afraid you didn't want me anymore." She gently stroked his cheek, fresh tears coming to her eyes. "I love you so much." Angel smiled. "I love you too."

Both laughed when the surf from the high tide started to swirl around them.

"Oh great. Mom's gonna kill me when she sees that I got the seats of my vette' wet." Buffy laughed. "I have my coat in my car. You can use that."

"What about the seats to your car?" "They'll dry." Buffy looked at Angel hopefully. "So you're coming back?" "Not for a few days. I have to clear up a few things in LA first. Then I'll be back." "Promise?" Angel grinned.

"Promise."

Though the water swirling around them was freezing, Buffy pushed Angel onto his back. She straddled his waist and grinned when Angel raised an eyebrow at her. "You know what time it is now?" She asked him. "I don't know. I don't have a watch." "That's not what I meant. I meant it's time for major smoochies." Angel smiled and pulled her down to him.
