The prolific Daniel Simmons writes about the worst kind of monsters: humans who have strangely gone beyond death, beyond morality, beyond control. Maybe more because they themselves are not physically monstrous, not embued with great prowess or strength, not red of fang and claw --- but seemingly just three old folks that look like someone's grandparents. But hopefully that's where the resemblance stops.

These are mind suckers, soul drinkers to whom human death and violent destruction is the wine and fine food of life. Like grand puppeteers, they stage holocausts and murders for their own entertainment as well as for their sustanance. It's a wicked, wicked life...and a horribly fine read.
