Dragon Warrior Run works most of the time in this game. If the monster blocks your path, you can try again. Only a couple times during the entire game was I denied running twice in a row. Not only can running get you out of trouble but it can let you get to far away towns and dungeons at a much lower level than if you had to actually fight the monsters. For example, at level 17 I was able to run my way deep into the final castle to retrieve the best sword in the game, Erdrick's Sword. Sleep also works better in this game than in other games. While not as reliable as running, sometimes its affects can be amazing. I was able to defeat the green dragon to save the princess at only level 13 because I got lucky and the dragon stayed asleep for 4 rounds of combat. I found Repel and Hurtmore to be useless spells. Repel is supposed to lower the chance of encountering monsters but it didn't seem to help at all. By the time you get the spell Hurtmore you should be able to hit almost as hard with your sword. Save the magic points for heals. Besides, the Dragonlord is immune to magic anyway. I only found StopSpell useful once, and it was to stop the Axe Knight in the abandoned town from putting me to sleep. The best part was, he would try to put me to sleep anyway, which would waste his turn, giving me more time to beat on him. The Axe Knight is an automatic fight on the one square with a tree, behind a couple squares of poison on the eastern side of the abandoned city. Search the ground after killing the knight to find Erdrick's Armor, the best armor in the game. It makes you immune to poisonous swamps and heals you one HP per step. I beat the Axe Knight at level 16, but to be safe you could wait until level 17 when you get Healmore. |
