Soul Ships

We saw three ships come sailing in
on the evening tide,
black sails unfurled; they
made no attempt to hide

We saw three ships come sailing in
oars up out of the water, a restless
sea of white caped and
billowing black waves

We saw three ships come sailing in
and people gathered about
on the silvered shore waiting
in the purple dusk for their cargo

We saw three ships come sailing in
and sailors all upon the deck
weapons held at the ready
and faces set in death's wide grin

We saw three ships come sailing in
on the evening tide and with
ululating cries they came ashore
and bid us all to ride

We saw three ships come sailing in
and felt our souls cringe away
from their staring gaze and
the cold cruelty of the waves

We saw three ships come sailing in
and made a choice to stay,
unknowing that we should have
fled far and farther away
We saw three ships come sailing in
upon the evening tide and so again
we saw them leave, only now
we, the lost souls, were on board
