Ricoba
The Land

Line

ost of Ricoba consists of an arid plateau painted in a patchwork of pasture, cropland, scrub and forest. The woodlands are a shadowy but pleasant place of evergreens and mixed hardwoods. Numerous bands of Vistani find shelter among the trees, and a modest number of Ricobans still eke out a simple existence there as well, far from the bustle and filth of the cities. This wilderness, however, is rapidly being cleared to make way for the agriculture necessary to sustain the domain's growing population. Ricoban farmers raise mainly wheat, but rye, barley and large variety of nuts are also produced. Sheep and goat herding is also prominent; the wool, milk and meat of Ricoba are known throughout the Core. Though most of Ricoba's nobles dwell in the cities, many of domain's prominent families possess large castles on rural estates. These structures are among the most impressive and impenetrable in the whole Demiplane. The Luna River arcs through the central region of the domain, flowing north into Falkovnia. A local tributary, the Caizada River, joins the Luna south of Ricoba's northern border.

The western edge of the domain is a craggy hinterland of sharp ridges and foothills, which effectively divides Ricoba from Mordent. This region is largely uninhabited, and is appropriately named the Lonely Sierra. Although the majority of Ricoba could hardly be called lush, the vegetation in this region is especially sparse, most of it consisting of stunted shrubs and forbs. The Newbury River drains the interior of the Sierra, flowing into Mordent to the west. The Sunflower River cuts across the southwestern corner of the Sierra from the foothills of Arkandale. The beautiful and sparkling Lake Guernica is nestled deep in the Sierra. Its deceptively clear waters, however, are as poisonous as a nightshade. The Sierra is avoided by sensible folk, who believe that terrifying monsters hunt there in search of human flesh; some even say the hills conceal a gateway to the infernal realms. Such tales do not deter everyone, however, as the Sierra is dotted with fortresses and towers. These structures provide shelter and privacy for bands of brigands, as well as wizards of sinister reputation.

The majority of Ricoba's burgeoning population dwells in its three cities: Ponferrada, Santoņa and Monesterio. All three cities are characterized by two features. The first is an elaborate sewer network, arguably the most sophisticated in the whole Demiplane. These systems may have provided superior sanitation at one time, but have become so infested with vermin and clogged with waste that their utility has long since passed. Some folk say that the cities' sewers may even be linked together through miles of subterrannean tunnels. The second characteristic is a dramatic underpopulation when compared to the number of people they could accommodate. Ricoba's cities are filled with crumbling, uninhabited buildings whose previous residents-if any-are a mystery. Not even the Ricobans know why these buildings stand abandoned. Ponferrada lies on the Luna River near the northern border, and is home to 16,000 souls. Santoņa, with a population of 6,500, rests on the westernmost point of the Luna River in the domain. Monesterio, with 8,000 people, is located in the southeastern edge of Ricoba, close to where the Luna, Vasha and Musarde River join together.

Ricoba's long summers are exceedingly dry and warm, and the winters are bitter but brief. The usual assortment of temperate wildlife is common in Ricoba, including wolves, boars, predatory birds and small mammals. Of course, the domain's cities have a persistent and nearly hopeless problem with rats.
