In Sioux City, Iowa, Mulder and Scully investigate the disappearence of Ruby Morris. Her mother, Darlene, claims Ruby was abducted by aliens. The Sioux City sheriff believes Ruby ran away. For a time, it appears that the sheriff is right. Another young woman, named Tessa, comes forward to claim that a biker-bartender-named Greg Randall had gotten Ruby pregnant and that he and Ruby were planning to meet the night she disappeared. Mulder and Scully soon discover that Tessa is the one who is pregnant and that she murdered Randall the night Ruby disappeared.
With Ruby still missing, Mulder returns to the cases most baffling element. Ever since Ruby disappeared, her little brother Kevin has scrawled long strips of binary code(1s and 0s). He claims to receive the information from television. Strangely enough, analysis reveals a semingly randon numbers area ctually fragments of digitized pictures and music-even a portion of a secret satellite transmission. Mulder believes that Kevin was touched in some way by the abduction, and in short order the young boy produces a multipage binary portrait of his sister. Then Ruby unexpectedly returns. For Mulder, it's a prime oppurtunity to learn more about alien abductions. Medical evidence does indicate a prolonged period of weightlessness. Unfortunately, Darlene won't allow any further investigation, and Ruby says "they" told her not to tell.
