When Conel Robert Budahas, stationed at Ellens Air Base in Idaho, suffers a mental
breakdown and is hauled away by military police, his wife-in desperation- reports the matter to the FBI as a kidnapping.
Mulder takes notice. The base supposedly recieved material from an alleged
UFO crash in Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947. And since 1963 the base has reported six pilots "missing in action." Mulder suspects that the military has created some type of aircraft from UFO technology and that the craft is harming its test pilots in some way. He intends to use the kidnapping charge to find out more. Then an unidentified man ("Deep Throat") suddenly appears to warn Mulder off the case, further strengthening Mulder's determination.
Shortly after arriving in Idaho, however, Mulder and Scully learn that Budahas has
mysteriously returned-though his wife claims it isn't really him. And by this time both agentshave witnessed strange lights in the sky. Driven to investigate, Mulder sneaks onto the base. He is quickly apprehended, but not before seeing an advanced traingular-shaped craft. Unfortunately, the military wipes his memory out even as Scully arranges for his release.
A week later, in Washington, D.C., Deep Throat reappears to tell Mulder that his and
Scully's lives are in danger-that care and discretion are imperative.
