In Washington, D.C., FBI Special Agent Dana Scully-trained as a medical doctor-to right field reports and provide a scientific analysis on Special Agent Fox Mulder. Formerly a psychological profiler for the Violent Crimes Section, Mulder has developed a consuming interest in the x-files, cases that the Bureau deams "unexplained phenomena." (Mulder's sister, Samantha, disappeared at age eight. Mulder believes she was abducted by aliens. He hopes the X-Files will prove this to be the truth.)
The next morning, Mulder and Scully fly to Bellefleur, Oregan the site of a recent series of unexplained deaths among the graduates of the high school class of 1989. Once there, the two FBI agents quickly discover more mysteries. The exhuemed body of Ray Soames-the third of the four to die-looks more alien than human and contains a metal, nasal implant. Then wheelchair-bound Peggy O'Dell-also of the class of '89-is killed after running in front of a semi truck. Even stranger Mulder and Scully determine that the most likely suspect in the deaths is Billy Miles, a young man who has just awakened from a 33 year coma. Under hypnosis, Miles speaks of graduation night in 1989-of a light taking him to a "testing place" and of being ordered to bring the others. However, Miles also insists that the tests failed and that "they" wanted everything destroyed.
It is impossible for the pair to corrborate Miles' story, but clearly someone wants the evidence destroyed. By the end of the episode, Soames' body has disappeared; all photographs and X rays have been burned; the Raymond County prosecuter drops the case against Billy Miles; and the only remaining piece of evidence-the metal implant-is given to a mysterious cigarette-smoking man who locks it away in a secured warehouse at the Pentagon.
