His voice was smooth and silky, his mind knowing he knew that distinctly feminine voice well. "So, dear childe of night, what are you longing to hear?" The caller was unhesitant as she boldly said, "'A Thousand Words.'" Lucien Lacroix pursed a lip, not recalling precisely what song the voice over the microphone was referring to. Urs, who was standing off in the shadows, smiled and mouthed the answer he was looking for. His lip curled into an incredulous snarl. "Absolutely, caller, and do you by chance have anything you wish to say as a preempt?" "No, the song speaks for itself." And with that the caller hung up. Lacroix hit the button sending the song through the system. He had never heard this song but if it was anything like the other pieces by this "band," his normal listeners would be howling for his blood. Which was ironic considering at least one loyal listener was *of* his blood. "We stumble in a tangled web, decaying friendships almost dead And hide behind a mask of lies We twist and turn and we avoid, all hope of salvage now devoid" Lacroix surveyed the room. Was this a joke? Whose idea was this? The voice was achingly familiar, but the depth in her tone was... new to him. "I see the truth inside your eyes So take all that noise into your brain and send it back again" A dozen or so dancers were on the floor moving to the throbbing music of the Raven, oblivious to the radio broadcast, lost in their own lives. No eyes cast towards him, no eyes except Urs, who watched him quietly from her shadowed corner with a confident, secretive smile. A shadowy corner with no phone. Besides, there'd be echo if she'd call that close to the equipment. "I'll bear the cost, shed my skin call you up and then... I'll say the words out loud" Daring to stand and step away from the table, noting the display with ample time left to the song, he let the energy of the Raven wash over him. Who would do this? "You could resurrect a thousand words to decieve me more and more A thousand words will give the reasons why I don't need you anymore" Nicholas. He was behind this. Only he could be so foolish to put someone up to requesting a "sot off" song. "Time manipulates your heart, preconceptions torn apart Begin to doubt my state of mind But I won't go down on what I said I won't retract convictions read" Had she been there, Janette might have know, but the dark haired goddess was gone to parts unknown, leaving his suspicious mind to expand his musings. Was it another vampire? He knew who his children were, but it was not just his family that inhabited Toronto. "I may perplex, but I'm not blind" A mortal. "So take all this noise into your brain and send it back again I'll bear the coat, shed my skin call you up and then... " A mortal. Did they know what they were doing?! ~Play the game with predators and you'll be eaten, mes enfants.~ "You could resurrect a thousand words words to decieve me more and more A thousand words words will give you the reasons why I don't need you anymore I'll say the words out loud. I'll say a thousand words or more" Perhaps she was not speaking to him. Perhaps another listener, someone she knew would be tuning in the show as a dedicated listener or a one time interest. Either way, that tone in her voice said she *knew* whomever the focus of the song was was listening tonight. "Manipulation. Fabrication. Conversation. Annihilation." And whatever she had to say was not exactly perky. ~"The song speaks for itself."~ "I'll say a thousand words or more Damnation. Frustration. Elevation. Procreation. I'll say a thousand words or more" Was she aware of the community? Was the shiver that was coursing down his spine as the words were sung in fear of vampires being exposed to mainstream society or was he finding this dangerously seductive? ~"The song speaks for itself."~ "You could resurrect a thousand words" And then the door to the Raven opened admitting a single patron. "to decieve me more and more" She walked down the stairs, a strength in her step, an air of dark curiousity touching her youthful face. "A thousand words will give me the reasons" She cut across the dancing crowd, her path seemingly focused towards his position. Her eyes locked on his, Lacroix not wishing to break the gaze for anything. "why I don't need you anymore" Steps away. He could smell her perfume, sweet and musk laden. She strode confidently over to him and stopped just far enough away for him to see that seh had no intention to walk away until she got what she wanted. "Hello, my dear." She crossed her arms underneath her chest. "Are you trying to get me staked?" A smile curled up her painted lips, her eyes watching him with wicked interest. Finally, watching her posture, feeling her heart beat in that rhythm he knew so well, he extended a hand. "I'm so glad you're back, my dear. Now what exactly did you have in mind for my punishment?" Licking her lips, tossing the small purse to Urs, Tracy Vetter sighed. "Oh, I don't know. A thousand things come to mind at the moment." "Oh?" "Yes," her smile remained as she slid up against his body, stole a brief, hard kiss and then backed away, turning on a high heel. Lacroix's jaw dropped. The tone in her voice on the radio said she *knew* whomever the focus of the song was was listening tonight. The song was for him. *********************** {finis} Comments and frustrated nighttime DJs to dpangel@thegrid.net.
