Back Cover Text: The Chaos War is over, magic has gone away...Or has it?
The gods have vanished, and magic wanes from Krynn. It is the
Age of Mortals, but also the Age of Dragons, more massive and powerful
than any seen before. They are devastating villages, enslaving people,
and claiming to be the overlords of Ansalon. The War of the Lance
was only a rehearsal, the War Against Chaos only a skirmish. The
War of the Dragons is imminent.
Goldmoon, last of the original companions, is not willing to give up,
and searches for new heroes to challenge the overlords. One troubled
man answers her call.
Review:
I was pretty upset when magic disappeared along with the gods, and the
remedy to the old magic didn't satisfy me. I found many of the changes
in the Fifth Age unrealistic. As far as the plot goes, the ending
was a somewhat weak, along with other flaws. I felt that the plot
design and character development could have been better too. For
example, Rig and Dhamon taking on over a dozen well armed, trained Knights
of Takhisis is pretty ridiculous, along with Rig's unending supply of
daggers. But Jean Rabe's actual writing style, while cheesy at times,
is okay--I had enough interest to read on. This book is okay, but
my main argument for reading it is to understand the 5th Age better.
