Back Cover Text: A mage's soul is forged in the crucible of magic.
Raistlin Majere is six years old when he is introduced to the archmage
who enrolls him in a school for the study of magic. There the gifted
and talented but tormented boy comes to see magic as his salvation.
Mages in the magical Tower of High Sorcery watch him in secret, for they
see shadows darkening over Raistlin even as the same shadows lengthen over
all Ansalon.
Finally, Raistlin draws near his goal of becoming a wizard. But
first he must take the dread Test in the Tower of High Sorcery. It
will change his life forever--if he survives.
Review: A very good story of Raistlin's youth. It brings about a better
understanding of people's favorite archmage. Here we get to see Raistlin
start to evolve into the character we know from Chronicles and Legends.
We see some of the influences that eventually made him take the dark path:
the way he was treated, his beginnings of jealousy of his brother, his
need for power. But this book isn't just about Raistlin. It's as
much a story about the companions and how their friendships developed.
Although some events do not match what was told in previous DL books, if
you disregard that it shouldn't be a problem. But the most important
event in this book is the complete account of what happened during Raistlin's
Test in the Tower of High Sorcery.
Rating: 9/10.
